{"id":361398,"date":"2026-04-23T15:19:45","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T09:49:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=361398"},"modified":"2026-04-23T15:19:45","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T09:49:45","slug":"shekha-bird-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/shekha-bird-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Shekha Bird Sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>News: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, was recognised as a Ramsar site.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>About Shekha Bird Sanctuary<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 256px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/HGjtIGqbkAA48GW?format=jpg&amp;name=small\" alt=\"Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary\" width=\"256\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: myGOV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Shekha Bird Sanctuary<\/strong> is a <strong>freshwater<\/strong> lake located in<\/span><b> Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> perennial lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that came into existence after the <\/span><b>formation of the Upper Ganges Canal in 1852.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Upper Ganga canal flows adjacent to the lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <strong>divides<\/strong> the lake into <strong>two parts<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Rainfall: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area receives moderate<strong> rainfall <\/strong>up to a maximum of<strong> 644 mm.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Area: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its total area is<\/span><b> 25 ha.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Ramsar Site:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has been declared a Ramsar site in<\/span><b> 2026.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>With this addition, India\u2019s <strong>total number<\/strong> of internationally recognised wetlands is <strong>99<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lake and its surrounding areas support a diversity of <strong>habitats<\/strong>, viz., <\/span><b>wetland, grassland, forest, agricultural land, etc.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Flora:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The dominant tree species that surround the lake are<\/span><b> Terminalia arjuna and Syzigium cumini.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other components of the vegetation include <\/span><b>acacias, Dalbergia sissoo, and neem, among others.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major weeds include <\/span><b>Lantana camara, Sida, Parthenium hysterophorus and Cassia tora.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Fauna: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Species such as<\/span><b> blue bulls, blackbuck, five-striped squirrels, and Indian mongoose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are found here.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a famous habitat for winter migratory birds traversing the<\/span><b> Central Asian Flyway migratory route, such as the bar-headed goose and the painted stork.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Recently, the Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, was recognised as a Ramsar site.
