<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Western Basin of\u00a0 the\u00a0 English\u00a0 Channel\u00a0 (WBEC):\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the west, the coast is<\/span><b> characterised by hard Palaeozoic rocks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (including some Precambrian rocks on the French side), which form <\/span><b>eroding cliffs, associated with small, sandy pocket beaches, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and relatively small<\/span><b> rias and estuaries.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Eastern\u00a0 Basin\u00a0 of the\u00a0 English\u00a0 Channel\u00a0 (EBEC):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0There are <\/span><b>high chalk cliffs along the English Dover Strait <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>French Pays de Caux, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which have narrow beaches of sand and gravel (flint\/chalk).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along the French coasts, <strong>b<\/strong><\/span><b>ays such as the Mont-Saint-Michel Bay, Bay of Seine, and Bay of Somme <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have acted as <strong>sediment traps<\/strong> throughout the Holocene, filling with marine sand during the last transgression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Climate:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has a <strong>temperate maritime<\/strong> climate <\/span>characterized by<b> warm summers and cool to cold winters.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Economic Importance: <\/b>It is the <b>busiest shipping route in the world,<\/b> with over <b>500 ships passing through it each day.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<\/span> handles nearly<b> 20% <\/b>of global maritime trade<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presence of sandy beaches, a favourable climate, and well-developed ferry services has <\/span><b>boosted tourism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along the English Channel.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Sandhurst Treaty<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <strong>bilateral treaty<\/strong> signed<strong> between France and the UK<\/strong> that has allowed for juxtaposed <strong>border controls<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Aim:<\/strong> It aims to <strong>prevent illegal crossings<\/strong> of the English Channel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was<strong> signed in 2018,<\/strong> which was <strong>extended<\/strong> for the first time in <strong>2023<\/strong> and <strong>expires in 2026.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After several months of negotiations,<strong> France and the United Kingdom have agreed to renew the Sandhurst Treaty for the next three years.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agreement <strong>emphasises joint responsibility,<\/strong> with both countries cooperating on border management and migration control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<strong> allows UK to return some small boat arrivals to France<\/strong> while admitting an equivalent number of migrants from France who have not attempted to cross into the UK.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Key Highlights of the agreement:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0UK will <\/span><b>provide up to \u20ac766 million over three years,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with \u20ac580 million guaranteed and the remaining amount linked to the effectiveness of measures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agreement will help to<\/span><b> increase border surveillance and enhance security infrastructure.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>number of personnel monitoring the Channel is set to rise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to around 1,400 officers by 2029.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>special French Republican Security Corps (CRS) unit <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is dedicated to tackling illegal crossings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Use of drones, helicopters, and electronic surveillance tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been expanded.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: France and the UK have renewed the Sandhurst Treaty to curb illegal crossings across the English Channel.
