Climate Change<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhoj Wetland is located in<\/span><b> Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It comprises<\/span><b> two contiguous man-made reservoirs,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> namely<\/span><b> the Upper Lake (Bhojtal or Bada Talaab) and the Lower Lake (Chota Talaab).<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>The upper lake is the <strong>oldest among the large man-made lakes in central India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was<strong> created by King Bhoj in the 11th century<\/strong> by constructing an earthen dam across the <strong>Kolans River<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The upper and lower lakes are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">separated by an overbridge called<\/span><b> Pul Pukhta.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/answered-what-is-wetland-explain-the-ramsar-concept-of-wise-use-in-the-context-of-wetland-conservation-cite-two-examples-of-ramsar-sites-from-india\/\">Ramsar Sites<\/a>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It was designated as a Ramsar site in <strong>November 2002.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Boundaries: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<strong> Upper Lake is bordered<\/strong> by <\/span><b>Van Vihar National Park to the south,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> human settlements<\/strong> to the east and north, and<strong> agricultural fields<\/strong> to the west.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Lower Lake <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><b>surrounded by human settlements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on all sides.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Fauna: <\/b>It is <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rich in aquatic biodiversity,<\/span><b> particularly in macrophytes, phytoplankton, and zooplankton.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Significance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It provides <strong>drinking water and recreational benefits<\/strong> to approximately 1.8 million residents of Bhopal.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>Upper Lake provides about 40% of the city\u2019s drinking water<\/strong>, about 29 million gallons per day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Threats<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>Unregulated urban development<\/li>\n<li>Inefficient waste treatment systems<\/li>\n<li>Weak enforcement of ecological safeguards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: After addressing encroachment and environmental issues at Bhopal\u2019s Upper Lake, the NGT has now turned its focus to the Lower Lake, part of the Bhoj Wetland.
