their underside is a lighter shade.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their<\/span><b> dark powder-pink face<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>narrow nose are fur-free.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have<\/span><b> powerful jaws <\/b>with long canine teeth and<b> cheek <\/b><strong>pouche<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>s<\/strong> that are used to store food.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their <\/span><b>front limbs are longer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than their hind limbs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They<\/span><b> lack a tail, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and that&#8217;s why they are sometimes called <\/span><b>Barbary apes.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Height and weight:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They have a height of <strong>45\u201370 cm<\/strong> and weigh between <strong>10\u201316 kg.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Diet:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They are<\/span><b> omnivorous.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They consume leaves, roots, and fruit. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also feed on occasional insects, caterpillars, frogs, and tadpoles.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Behaviour:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They are <\/span><b>generally active during the daytime hours.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are <strong>highly social animals,<\/strong> gathering in groups of up to 59 individuals.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are<\/span><b> alloparental animal. <\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his means that the <strong>adult males and females look after all the offspring<\/strong> in the group, <strong>not just their own.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Both <\/b>males and females have their<b> separate hierarchies. <\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Females form<\/span><b> strictly matrilineal hierarchies, in which each individual is <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranked.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Threats: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main threat to them is<strong> habitat loss due<\/strong> to:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Hunting<\/li>\n<li>Wildfires<\/li>\n<li>Logging<\/li>\n<li>Human expansion<\/li>\n<li>and\u00a0Poaching of infants and juveniles for the pet trade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Conservation status:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>CITES:<\/strong> Appendix I<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>IUCN Red List:<\/strong> <strong>Endangered <\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: According to a new study, Barbary macaques in Europe eat soil to help their digestive system cope with low-fibre junk foods such as crisps, chocolate, bread, and ice cream.
