400;\">between the<\/span><b> Pacific and the Arctic Ocean.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Connecting:<\/strong> It connects the <\/span><b>Bering Sea <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the <\/span><b>Chukchi Sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the<\/span><b> Arctic Ocean.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its <\/span><b>narrowest point <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is between<\/span><b> Cape Prince of Wales in Alaska <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Cape Dezhnev in Russia.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Geography:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Depth:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is<\/span><b> relatively shallow, with an average depth of 50 m.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Width: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its narrowest point, it is <\/span><b>about 53 miles (85 km) wide.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Climate:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In winter, it experiences severe storms, with <\/span><b>ice covering most parts of the Bering Sea.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 In <\/span><b>midsummer,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the ice drifts into the strait.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Island: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has numerous islands, including the<\/span><b> Diomede Islands and St. Lawrence Islands.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> two Diomede Islands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are<\/span><b> located in the middle of the strait.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>St. Lawrence Island <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the<\/span><b> U.S.A&#8217;s sixth-largest Island.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Significance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It plays a very important role in <\/span><b>global ocean circulation and climate <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because it is the only route through which <\/span><b>water can flow between the Arctic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Researchers have recently proposed a construction of the Bering Strait Dam (BSD), which could help to stabilise the<a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/atlantic-meridional-overturning-circulation-amoc-2\/\"><strong> Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Proposed Bering Strait Dam (BSD)<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 502px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" Arctic Ocean using three connected dams. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It would have a:\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>western section<\/strong> linking <strong>mainland Russia to Big Diomede Island<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A <strong>middle section<\/strong> joining the <strong>two Diomede Islands<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n<li>An <strong>eastern section<\/strong> connecting <strong>Little Diomede Island to Alaska in the USA.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Size:<\/strong> Together, these sections would stretch for <strong>about 80 km. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Depth:<\/strong> It would be<strong> built in waters with an average depth of around 50 m,<\/strong> reaching a maximum depth of about <strong>59 m<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Purpose:<\/strong> It is to <strong data-start=\"902\" data-end=\"976\">block the flow of water between the Pacific Ocean and the Arctic Ocean<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Scientists suggest that this could help <strong>stabilise the AMOC<\/strong>, which transports heat across the globe and affects climate patterns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Diomede Islands<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 396px\" class=\"wp-caption Island<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>It <strong>forms a part of Russia\u2019s Chukotka Autonomous Okrug<\/strong> and is considered the <strong>easternmost point of Russia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>situated about 45 km southeast of Cape Dezhnev on the Chukchi Peninsula. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It serves as an <strong>important site for a Russian weather station and a border service station. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Little Diomede Island:<\/strong> It is also known as <strong>I\u014baliq<\/strong><em>.<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>It is <strong>administered by the U.S.A.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is situated about <strong>25 km to the west of the Alaskan mainland<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>village<\/strong> of Diomede is the <strong>only settlement<\/strong> on the island, which\u00a0is inhabited by <strong>Inupiaq peoples<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distance:<\/strong> The distance between the two islands is about <strong>3.75 km<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The two islands are separated <strong>by the American-Russian maritime border and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldatlas.com\/articles\/what-is-the-international-date-line.html\">International Date Line<\/a>. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time difference: Big Diomede<\/strong> is also known as <strong>Tomorrow Island,<\/strong> and the <strong>Little Diomede<\/strong> is referred to as<strong> Yesterday Isle.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This is because
