widespread <\/span><b>hyperaccumulating, phreatophytic, perennial tree\/shrub species.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Family:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a member of the <\/span><b>Fabaceae family.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>representative species <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the <\/span><b>Sonoran Desert ecosystem.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Distribution: It is a Mexican-origin shrub.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are approximately <\/span><b>40 species of Prosopis distributed throughout Asia, Africa and America.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plant was<\/span><b> first introduced by the British in the 1920s to \u2018green\u2019 Delhi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>by the Gujarat forest department in 1961<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to halt the encroaching salt desert in the Rann.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is now found in many states, including<\/span><b> Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal and <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in almost all districts of<\/span><b> Haryana, Gujarat and Rajasthan.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is known as <\/span><b>gando baval in the Kutch region, Vilayati keekar in North India <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Velikathan in Tamil.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, Maldharis local pastoral community living<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Banni Grasslands Reserve area<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><b>dependent on widely grown Prosopis juliflora for two main reasons:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prosopis is a<strong> major grazing option for cattle,<\/strong> especially buffaloes, for the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They use <strong>Prosopis trees to make charcoal,<\/strong> which has become an important way to earn money.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Geographical conditions:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Soil:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is capable of growing on<\/span><b> inhospitable habitats such as rocky and saline soils, under adverse climatic conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Climate:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is well adapted to warm and dry tropical climates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Rainfall: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0It grows well in areas receiving 250-600 mm annual rainfall.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Characteristics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>thorny, deciduous, large-crowned, and deep-rooted bush.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Height:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It grows up to a<\/span><b> height of about 10 m.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bark:<\/strong> It has a<\/span><b> thick, rough, grey-green bark<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that becomes scaly with age.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stem: The plants are <\/span><b>often multistemmed with many sharp thorns that measure up to 5 cm.\u00a0 <\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stems of it are <\/span><b>often \u201cmild zigzag\u201d in shape, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with one or two thorns present at each turn.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Flower: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <strong>flowers twice a year<\/strong>, in February-March and August-September, and is a <strong>prolific seeder<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> regional adaptation of the species, easy dispersion, and lack of proper management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have led P. juliflora<\/span><b> to be considered an invasive species.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This weed is to become <\/span><b>the feedstock for India\u2019s first green methanol production plant, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">designed to fuel ocean-going ships.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Threat associated with it:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a non-native and invasive tree species, thus impacting <\/span><b>habitat specialist species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as the desert fox, Houbara bustard and spiny-tailed lizard.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<\/span><b> depletes groundwater availability, increases soil salinity,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>makes the grassland more susceptible to wildfires.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Prevention:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Short-term restoration: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Banni Grasslands can be<\/span><b> managed using a mosaic approach, where <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both restored grasslands and some areas of Prosopis juliflora are maintained.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Mechanical removal of Prosopis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be used in small areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Long-term restoration:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>needs and livelihoods of local communities must be considered,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as many Maldharis depend on Prosopis for income and grazing.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists and policymakers should <\/span><b>study the long-term ecological effects, such as changes in soil, water, and wildlife,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before making large-scale restoration decisions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Banni
