{"id":36215,"date":"2018-11-02T11:10:45","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T05:40:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=36215"},"modified":"2018-11-02T11:10:45","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T05:40:45","slug":"no-development-zone-near-ganga-river-says-ngt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/no-development-zone-near-ganga-river-says-ngt\/","title":{"rendered":"No development zone near Ganga river, says NGT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tribunal-prohibits-dumping-of-waste-near-ganga-banks\/article19274204.ece\">Tribunal prohibits dumping of waste near Ganga banks<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: (The Hindu)<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>No development zone near Ganga river, says NGT<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An area of 100 metres from the edge of the Ganga between Haridwar and Unnao has been declared a \u2018No Development Zone,\u2019 with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) prohibiting dumping of waste within 500 metres of the river.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Directions given by NGT<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NGT directed the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments to formulate new guidelines for the religious activities performed on the Ganga Ghats and its tributaries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An environment compensation of Rs. 50,000 will be imposed on anyone dumping waste in the river.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar ordered the authorities concerned to complete projects within two years including a sewage treatment plant and cleaning of drains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Uttar Pradesh government is duty-bound to shift tanneries, within six weeks, from Jajmau in Kanpur to leather parks in Unnao or any other place it considers appropriate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The court also appointed a supervisory committee, headed by the Secretary of the Water Resources Ministry and comprising IIT professors and officials of the Uttar Pradesh government.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supervisory committee will oversee implementation of the directions passed in its verdict.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All industrial units in the catchment areas of the Ganga will be stopped from indiscriminate groundwater extraction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No in-stream mechanical mining is permitted and even the mining on the floodplain will now be semi-mechanical and more manual.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such mining will be allowed only after a detailed and comprehensive assessment of the annual replenishment of sand and gravel in the riverbed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tribunal prohibits dumping of waste near Ganga banks: (The Hindu) No development zone near Ganga river, says NGT Context An area of 100 metres from the edge of the Ganga between Haridwar and Unnao has been declared a \u2018No Development Zone,\u2019 with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) prohibiting dumping of waste within 500 metres of&hellip;
