for fission. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/aneel-new-nuclear-fuel-that-can-guarantee-indias-green-energy-transition\/\"><strong>HALEU (High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium)<\/strong><\/a> is used as the<strong> initiating fuel source or \u201cspark plug\u201d<\/strong> to activate the thorium-based reaction cycle.<\/li>\n<li>Together, these materials are designed to combine thorium\u2019s long-term fuel potential with the ignition capability provided by HALEU.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>ANEEL has the following advantages<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It <strong>can be used in the existing Pressurised Heavy-Water Reactors (PHWRs),<\/strong> which are an indigenous reactor system.<\/li>\n<li>It provides an <strong>easier and quicker alternative<\/strong> for the deployment of thorium, leveraging imported HALEU, especially for nations which lack the infrastructure to install natural gas, wind, solar or hydro.<\/li>\n<li>By utilizing this fuel, the <strong>operation cost and nuclear waste can be reduced<\/strong>\u00a0significantly as compared with the currently used natural uranium.<\/li>\n<li>The fuel bundle <strong>lasts much longer and burns more efficiently.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The spent ANEEL fuel <strong>cannot be used for weapons.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>With this, <strong>India<\/strong>\u00a0can guarantee\u00a0<strong>green energy security<\/strong>\u00a0for the subcontinent by fast-tracking the use of<strong>\u00a0Thorium<\/strong> in nuclear reactors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Challenges:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Expensive:<\/strong>\u00a0Thorium is <strong>costly to extract from the ground,<\/strong> and <strong>building and testing thorium reactors is also very expensive.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Not directly usable as fuel: <\/strong>Thorium itself <strong>is not fissile,<\/strong> so it<strong> cannot start a nuclear reaction on its own<\/strong>.\u00a0It <strong>requires uranium or plutonium<\/strong> to maintain the reaction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Complex fuel process:<\/strong>\u00a0Thorium<strong> must first be converted into Uranium-233 before use.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Difficult handling:<\/strong>\u00a0Thorium fuel systems are<strong> technically challenging to manage.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Limited experience:<\/strong>\u00a0Most <strong>nuclear systems are designed for uranium, not thorium.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Regulatory challenges:<\/strong>\u00a0Thorium fuels still<strong> need approvals and commercial acceptance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Limited supply economics:<\/strong>\u00a0Thorium is mostly <strong>obtained as a by-product of rare earth mining, so production is limited.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Chicago-based nuclear fuel company Clean Core Thorium Energy (CCTE) announced that its patented \u2018ANEEL\u2019 fuel has completed its high burnup irradiation test in an Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL).
