{"id":36260,"date":"2018-11-02T11:35:55","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T06:05:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=36260"},"modified":"2018-11-02T11:35:55","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T06:05:55","slug":"prelims-related-news-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/prelims-related-news-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Prelims Related News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Prelims Related News<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/curcumin-nanoparticles-found-to-shorten-tb-treatment-time\/article19247763.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curcumin nanoparticles found to shorten TB treatment time<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basic ingredient of turmeric is five times more \u2018bio-available\u2019 in mice than in the regular one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Findings<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curcumin, the basic ingredient of turmeric, when administered in a nanoparticle formulation has several favourable properties in the treatment of tuberculosis in mice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nanoparticle curcumin are five times more bio-available (which is the proportion of drug that enters circulation after introduction into the body) in mice, than regular curcumin, and was able to drastically reduce liver toxicity induced by TB drug isoniazid.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment of TB with isoniazid along with 200 nanometre curcumin nanoparticles led to \u201cdramatically reduced\u201d risk of disease reactivation and re-infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Therapy<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the increased bioavailability of curcumin, the duration of treatment to achieve complete eradication of the bacteria is reduced significantly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treatment time required for complete eradication of bacteria was reduced by 50% in the case of mice. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Use of Curcumin<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients stop taking anti-TB drugs for a few days due to liver toxicity. Since the addition of curcumin reduces liver toxicity, there can be better treatment adherence and lesser risk of drug resistance emerging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like diabetes drug metformin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that limit inflammation, curcumin is a host-directed therapy, where the body\u2019s immune system is manipulated, rather than targeting the cause of the disease directly.
