UN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>UN assessment report on progress<\/strong> under the <strong>UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Released by:<\/strong> The report was released by the <strong>United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA)<\/strong> and the <strong>UN Forum on Forests Secretariat.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UN Forum on Forests<\/strong>: It is an intergovernmental body <strong>established in 2000<\/strong> that <strong>includes all UN member states and members of specialised agencies<\/strong> for promoting conservation, sustainable management, and development of <strong>all types of forests.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Findings and Trends:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Global Forest Cover<\/strong>: Forests <strong>cover 4.14 billion hectares<\/strong>, which accounts for <strong>nearly 32 per cent of the world\u2019s land area<\/strong> and around <strong>0.50 hectare per person.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Forest Distribution:<\/strong> Around <strong>45 per cent of forests<\/strong> are located in <strong>tropical regions<\/strong>, followed by <strong>28 per cent in boreal regions<\/strong>, <strong>17 per cent in temperate regions<\/strong>, and <strong>11 per cent in subtropical regions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Concentration in Few Countries:<\/strong> Nearly <strong>54 per cent of global forests are concentrated in five countries<\/strong>, including the <strong>Russian Federation, Brazil, Canada, the United States of America, and China.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Primary Forest Loss:<\/strong> The world lost <strong>nearly 16 million hectares of primary forests between 2015 and 2025,<\/strong> while <strong>South America recorded the largest decline.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Major Drivers of Degradation:<\/strong> Agricultural expansion, rising demand for fuelwood and charcoal, illegal trade, and weak governance continued to increase forest degradation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate-linked Pressures:<\/strong> Droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, pests, and diseases accelerated forest degradation in many regions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restoration and Finance Gap:<\/strong> Although <strong>91 countries pledged to restore 190 million hectares, only 44 million hectares were restored,<\/strong> while sustainable forest finance remained far below the required annual target.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recommendations<\/strong>: The report recommends stronger coordination, higher forest financing, deforestation-free supply chains, cleaner energy access, restoration of degraded lands, and stronger forest governance for sustainable management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>global framework adopted by the UN General Assembly<\/strong> to promote sustainable forest management, stop deforestation, and reverse forest degradation <strong>through six voluntary Global Forest Goals and 26 targets to be achieved by 2030.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Six Global Forest Goals (GFGs):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>GFGs 1:<\/strong> It\u00a0 focuses on <strong>reversing forest loss<\/strong> through sustainable forest management and restoration.<\/li>\n<li><strong>GFGs 2:<\/strong> It aims to <strong>enhance forest-based economic, social and environmental benefits.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>GFGs 3:<\/strong> It seeks to increase <strong>protected forests<\/strong> and sustainably managed forests worldwide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>GFGs 4<\/strong>: It focuses on <strong>mobilising financial resources<\/strong> for sustainable forest management.<\/li>\n<li><strong>GFGs5<\/strong>: It\u00a0 aims to <strong>promote governance<\/strong> frameworks for sustainable forest management.<\/li>\n<li><strong>GFGs 6:<\/strong> It seeks to <strong>strengthen cooperation and coordination<\/strong> on forest-related issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: A The United Nations released the Global Forest Goals Report 2026 during the 21st session of the UN Forum on Forests.
