{"id":36290,"date":"2018-11-02T11:58:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T06:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=36290"},"modified":"2018-11-02T11:58:13","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T06:28:13","slug":"sc-questions-ec-reluctance-to-use-vvpat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/sc-questions-ec-reluctance-to-use-vvpat\/","title":{"rendered":"SC questions EC reluctance to use VVPAT:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/sc-questions-ec-reluctance-to-use-vvpat\/article19228436.ece\">SC questions EC reluctance to use VVPAT<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme Court has questioned the Election Commission on its reluctance to use voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) units with EVMs for the Gujarat Assembly polls in 2017<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is the issue?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hearing was based on a petition filed by Mohit Singh, represented by Counsel Kapil Sibal, appealing against Gujarat High Court Order.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gujarat High Court had diminished the plea to direct the commission to implement the VVPAT voting mechanism in the Gujarat polls or otherwise use ballot papers to ensure a transparent, free and fair election.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2013\u2019s Subramanian Swamy vs. Election Commission of India case, the Supreme Court judgement had stated that the EVMs with VVPAT system ensure the accuracy of the voting system.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>KNOW ABOUT<\/b> <b>Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>What is VVPAT?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail is a method that provides feedback to voters. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an independent verification printer machine and is attached to electronic voting machines. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It allows voters to verify if their vote has gone to the intended candidate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>EVM\u2019s equipped with Voter-verified paper audit trail<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VVPAT device functions like a printer to be attached to the ballot unit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the vote is cast it dispenses a paper slip showing the symbol on which it is cast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The voter can only see this slip through a screened window.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After seven seconds, the slip automatically gets cut and falls into a sealed drop box.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The printout is deposited in a box and can be used to resolve any dispute regarding the election<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SC questions EC reluctance to use VVPAT:\u00a0 Context: The Supreme Court has questioned the Election Commission on its reluctance to use voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) units with EVMs for the Gujarat Assembly polls in 2017 What is the issue?
