
{"id":362911,"date":"2026-05-15T15:04:44","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T09:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=362911"},"modified":"2026-05-15T15:04:44","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T09:34:44","slug":"agalega-islands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/agalega-islands\/","title":{"rendered":"Agalega Islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News: <\/strong>Agalega Island is becoming a key part of India\u2019s strategy to strengthen its naval presence and monitor important trade routes in the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n<h2>About Agalega Islands<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 496px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.indianexpress.com\/2024\/03\/mauritius-map.jpg?resize=496%2C288&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Agalega Islands\" width=\"496\" height=\"288\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: IE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Agalega Islands<\/strong> are<strong> two islands situated in the Indian Ocean.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is surrounded by the<strong> Seychelles to the north,<\/strong> the <strong>Maldives, the US base Diego Garcia and Chagos Island<\/strong> to the <strong>east,<\/strong> and <strong>Madagascar, the Mozambique Channel, and the entire eastern coast of Africa<\/strong> to the <strong>west.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It lies <strong>approximately 1,050 km north of Mauritius<\/strong> and about <strong>3,400 km southwest of India\u2019s southern tip<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Composition:<\/strong> The archipelago comprises <strong>two low-lying coral islands &#8211;<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>North Island<\/strong>, the <strong>main<\/strong> inhabited island, and South Island.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>North Agalega houses the capital Vingt Cinq<\/strong> and the island\u2019s airstrip and <strong>Ste Rita is the only village in South Agalega.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The two islands are <strong>connected by a natural sandbank<\/strong> that can be crossed on foot during low tide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Total area:<\/strong> It has a total area of<strong> 26 sq. km.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Administration:<\/strong> Administratively, it is part of the<strong> territories and dependencies of the Republic of Mauritius.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Population:<\/strong> The islands are home to a<strong> small population of around 300 residents,<\/strong> whose daily lives revolve around <strong>fishing, coconut cultivation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora and fauna:<\/strong> The <strong>endemic<\/strong> plant is the <strong>coconut<\/strong> and <strong>Agalega Island Day Gecko<\/strong> is a native species.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/development-of-agalega-indias-rising-power-in-the-indian-ocean\/\">Strategic significance for India<\/a>:<\/strong> \u00a0This chain of islands is emerging as <strong>one of India\u2019s biggest strategic projects<\/strong> in the <strong>Indian Ocean region.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0The infrastructure developed there over the past few years is giving<strong> India a stronger military and maritime position across a large stretch of the ocean.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Strategically, it also gives<strong> India direct access to monitoring activity around the Mozambique Channel<\/strong>, an important sea route through which a large volume of trade moves between Asia, Europe and Africa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse;
