The Better India<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Ginger is an <strong>herbaceous perennial plant<\/strong> belonging to <strong>the Zingiberaceae family,<\/strong> which also includes turmeric and cardamom.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Economic Part:<\/strong> The <strong>rhizome of ginger<\/strong> is the main economic part.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Components:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gingerol<\/strong>: It is the most abundant compound <strong>in fresh ginger,<\/strong> especially [<strong>6]-gingerol<\/strong>, and acts as a <strong>strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Shogaol<\/strong>: It is formed when <strong>ginger is dried or heated,<\/strong> and it is more <strong>pungent with enhanced therapeutic properties.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Zingerone<\/strong>: It is produced <strong>during cooking and provides a milder and sweeter spiciness.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Paradol<\/strong>: It develops through the <strong>transformation of shogaols over time<\/strong> and contributes to the spice profile of aged ginger.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climatic &amp; Soil Requirements:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Climate<\/strong>: Ginger requires a <strong>warm and humid climate<\/strong> and can grow <strong>up to an altitude of 1500 m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Temperature<\/strong>: The crop performs well in a <strong>temperature range of 19\u00b0C to 28\u00b0C.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rainfall<\/strong>: It requires moderate to high <strong>rainfall of about 1,500\u20132,500 mm annually<\/strong> or reliable irrigation, but it does <strong>not tolerate frost or prolonged drought.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Soil<\/strong>: Ginger grows <strong>best in loose, fertile, well-drained loam or sandy-loam soils rich in organic matter.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Uses<\/strong>: Ginger is widely used as a <strong>spice for flavouring and also for medicinal purposes.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is used in <strong>food preparations, confectionery, beverages, and in making ginger candy and preserves.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance<\/strong>: Ginger contains a large amount of <strong>antioxidant compounds that help treat inflammatory conditions.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Ginger supplementation also <strong>reduces fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin A1c, and apolipoprotein B levels.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other Aspects:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Global Position:<\/strong> India <strong>contributes 30.48% of global ginger production<\/strong>, making it the <strong>world\u2019s largest producer, consumer, and exporter of ginger.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Major Producing States:<\/strong> <strong>Karnataka, Orissa, Gujarat, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh<\/strong> together contribute <strong>65% of India\u2019s total ginger production.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mizoram\u2019s Recognition:<\/strong> <strong>NITI Aayog declared Mizoram<\/strong> as the \u201c<strong>Ginger Capital of India\u201d<\/strong> due to its high-quality organic ginger production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Centre launched the \u20b9189.79-crore Mizoram Ginger Mission to promote GI-certified pharma-grade ginger through processing, branding and exports.
