History<\/strong><\/td>\n1)<\/strong>\u00a0The Government of India instituted two civilian awards<\/strong>–Bharat Ratna<\/strong> & Padma Vibhushan in 1954.<\/strong>
\n2)<\/strong>\u00a0Padma Vibhushan<\/strong> had three classes<\/strong> namely Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg and Tisra Varg.<\/strong>
\n3)<\/strong>\u00a0These were subsequently renamed<\/strong> as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri<\/strong> vide Presidential Notification<\/strong> issued on January 8, 1955.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
About<\/strong><\/td>\n1)<\/strong>\u00a0The Padma Awards are one of\u00a0the highest<\/strong>\u00a0civilian honours<\/strong> of India.
\n2)<\/strong>\u00a0They are announced annually<\/strong> on the eve of Republic Day<\/strong>.
\n3)<\/strong>\u00a0These Awards are conferred by\u00a0the President<\/strong>\u00a0of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan<\/strong> usually around March \/ April every year.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Ministry<\/strong><\/td>\nThe awards come under the aegis of the\u00a0Ministry of Home Affairs.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Objective<\/strong><\/td>\nTo acknowledge achievements in all fields of activities or discipline<\/strong> where element of\u00a0public service<\/strong>\u00a0is involved.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Categories<\/strong><\/td>\nThe Awards are given in three categories:<\/strong>
\n1)<\/strong>\u00a0Padma Vibhushan<\/strong> (for exceptional and distinguished service),
\n2)<\/strong>\u00a0Padma Bhushan<\/strong> (distinguished service of higher-order) and
\n3)<\/strong>\u00a0Padma Shri<\/strong> (distinguished service).<\/p>\n

  • Padma Vibhushan<\/strong> is highest<\/strong> in the hierarchy of Padma Awards<\/strong> followed by Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Discipline<\/strong><\/td>\nThe Awards are given in various disciplines\/ fields<\/strong> of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, music <\/strong>etc.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Eligibility<\/strong><\/td>\nAll persons without distinction<\/strong>\u00a0of race, occupation, position or sex are eligible for these Awards.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Selection process<\/strong><\/td>\n1)<\/strong>\u00a0All nominations received for the Padma Awards are placed before the\u00a0Padma Awards Committee<\/strong>\u00a0constituted by the\u00a0Prime Minister\u00a0every year.
\n2)<\/strong>\u00a0The Padma Awards Committee is headed<\/strong> by the\u00a0Cabinet Secretary<\/strong>\u00a0and includes the Home Secretary<\/strong>, the Secretary to the President <\/strong>and four to six eminent persons<\/strong> as members.
\n3)<\/strong>\u00a0The recommendations<\/strong> of the committee are submitted<\/strong> to the\u00a0Prime Minister and the President of India<\/strong> for approval.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Some important facts<\/strong><\/td>\n1)<\/strong>\u00a0The total number<\/strong> of awards to be given in a year (excluding posthumous awards and to NRI\/foreigners\/OCIs<\/strong>) should not be more than 120.<\/strong>
\n2)<\/strong>\u00a0The award does not amount to title<\/strong> and cannot be used as a suffix or prefix<\/strong> to the awardees\u2019 name.
\n3)<\/strong>\u00a0These were discontinued in 1978 and 1979<\/strong> and from 1993 to 1997.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
