They have been\u00a0tracked since November 2025 as part of a Manipur Amur Falcon Tracking Project by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>About Amur Falcon<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.download.ams.birds.cornell.edu\/api\/v1\/asset\/254019551\/320\" alt=\"Amur Falcons\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: E-Bird<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is a <strong>small migratory bird of prey<\/strong> belonging to the<strong> family Falconidae.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is known for its <strong>remarkable long-distance migration.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Scientific name:<\/strong> Its scientific name is <strong>Falco amurensi.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Named after:<\/strong> It is named after the<strong> Amur River,<\/strong> which runs through its breeding grounds in the Far East.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> It is found in <strong>open forests, grasslands, wetlands and agricultural landscapes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Distribution:\u00a0<\/strong> In <strong>India<\/strong>, it is primarily<strong> found during their migration in the northeastern states<\/strong>, especially in <strong>Nagaland, Manipur, and parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is locally<strong> known as \u2018Kahuaipuina.\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Note:<\/strong> The <strong>Doyang Reservoir in Nagaland<\/strong> is particularly famous as a significant <strong>roosting site<\/strong> for tens of thousands of Amur Falcons during their annual migration.<\/li>\n<li>It breeds in <strong>southeastern Siberia, northern China, and Mongolia, and winters in southern Africa.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Diet:\u00a0<\/strong>Its diet primarily <strong>consists of insects,<\/strong> particularly locusts and termites, which they catch in flight.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Characteristics:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Appearance<\/strong>: It is <strong>small in size<\/strong>, with males and females differing slightly in appearance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Males<\/strong> have <strong>slate-gray plumage<\/strong> with <strong>reddish-brown thighs<\/strong> and <strong>undertail<\/strong> <strong>coverts<\/strong>, and reddish-orange feet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Females<\/strong> are <strong>larger<\/strong> and have a more <strong>mottled, brownish-gray<\/strong> appearance with streaked underparts, making them more camouflaged.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Both<\/strong> sexes have <strong>distinct black eye masks<\/strong> and <strong>yellow ceres<\/strong> (the soft tissue at the base of their beaks).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Migration:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>After the breeding season, it undertake a<strong> remarkable migration of approximately 22,000 km to southern Africa.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Its route includes <strong>an incredible non-stop flight over the Arabian Sea,<\/strong> where they travel more than 3,000 kilometers without resting.\u00a0This migration is one of the longest recorded for any raptor species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Threat:<\/strong> It is primarily threatened by<strong> hunting during migration and habitat loss at roosting sites, and changing weather patterns.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation status: <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>IUCN: \u00a0<\/strong>Least Concern<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972:<\/strong> \u00a0Schedule IV<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Three Amur falcons tagged in Manipur were recently seen\u00a0wintering in Africa.
