Standards Organization (RDSO).<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO)<\/strong> has granted the <strong>required license for storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen<\/strong> <strong>gas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Indian Railways under \u201c<strong>Hydrogen for Heritage<\/strong>\u201d envisages deploying <strong>35 hydrogen-powered trains on heritage<\/strong> and <strong>hill routes<\/strong> across the country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prominent features of Hydrogen Train-set are as below:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Designed and Developed in India<\/strong> demonstrating Indian Railways\u2019 commitment to <strong>Atmanirbhar Bharat<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Presently, it is the <strong>world\u2019s longest (10 coaches) and most powerful (2400 kW) Hydrogen Train-set on Broad Gauge platform<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The train-set <strong>comprises<\/strong> of <strong>two Driving Power Cars (DPCs) of 1200 kW each<\/strong>, totaling <strong>2400 kW along with eight passenger cars<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Zero CO2 emissions<\/strong>; ScienceDirect<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Hydrogen fuel cell technology <strong>generates electricity<\/strong> through a <strong>chemical reaction<\/strong> using <strong>hydrogen, with water vapour<\/strong> as the <strong>only emission<\/strong>, making it a <strong>clean alternative<\/strong> to conventional fossil fuel-based traction systems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Components: The primary components<\/strong> of an HFC are &#8211;\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bipolar plates<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA)<\/strong>: The <strong>MEA<\/strong> is where the <strong>electrochemical reaction takes place<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>It <strong>consists<\/strong> of a <strong>Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM)<\/strong> placed <strong>between two catalyst layers<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>anode<\/strong> (where <strong>hydrogen gas enters the fuel cell<\/strong>) and cathode (where <strong>oxygen from the air enters<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>surrounded by the Gas Diffusion Layers<\/strong> that help <strong>distribute reactant gases<\/strong> (hydrogen and oxygen) and <strong>remove byproducts<\/strong> (water and heat).<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>PEM<\/strong> is a <strong>specially treated material<\/strong> that looks something like <strong>ordinary kitchen plastic wrap<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>conducts only positively charged ions<\/strong> and <strong>blocks the electrons<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The PEM is the <strong>key to the fuel cell technology<\/strong>; it must <strong>permit only the necessary ions<\/strong> to pass between the anode and cathode.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Working mechanism<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First, hydrogen fuel (H2)<\/strong> is <strong>passed through the anode<\/strong> and is <strong>split into protons (H+)<\/strong> and <strong>electrons (e-)<\/strong> via <strong>oxidation<\/strong> using a catalyst.<\/li>\n<li>Then the <strong>PEM allows only protons to pass<\/strong> through to the <strong>cathode<\/strong> and <strong>blocks the electrons.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Electrons<\/strong> flow through an <strong>external circuit<\/strong>, generating <strong>electricity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>At the <strong>cathode<\/strong>, <strong>oxygen (O2)<\/strong> from the <strong>air interacts<\/strong> with the catalyst and undergoes <strong>reduction<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Subsequently, <strong>Oxygen reacts<\/strong> with the <strong>protons<\/strong> that have passed through the membrane and the <strong>electrons from the external circuit to produce water (H2O).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: In a major step towards green and sustainable transportation, Indian Railways has approved the introduction of a 10-car Hydrogen Fuel Cell-based trainset on the dedicated Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway.
