Ministry of Culture<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The Khajuraho Group of Temples represents the <strong>culmination of northern Indian temple art and architecture of the Chandella dynasty.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Khajuraho temples are <strong>located in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Builder<\/strong>: The temples were built during the <strong>reign of the Chandella dynasty between 900 CE and 1130 CE<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Religious Affiliation:<\/strong> The temples are <strong>associated with Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Jainism, <\/strong>while the <strong>Parsvanatha Temple is the largest Jain temple in the complex.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Surviving Temples:<\/strong> Khajuraho had <strong>about 85 temples in the 12th century, but only around 20 temples remain today<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Categorisation<\/strong>: The Khajuraho temples are <strong>divided into three groups:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Western Group:<\/strong> This is the <strong>most important and well-preserved group<\/strong> and includes <strong>Kandariya Mahadeva Temple<\/strong>, Vishwanath Temple, Lakshmana Temple, Devi Jagdamba Temple, Chitragupta Temple, and Chausath Yogini Temple.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eastern Group:<\/strong> This group contains <strong>both Hindu and Jain temples<\/strong> and includes <strong>Brahma Temple, Vamana Temple, Javari Temple, Ghantai Temple, and Parsvanatha Temple.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Southern Group:<\/strong> This group includes <strong>Duladeo Temple<\/strong> and <strong>Chaturbhuja Temple<\/strong>, which is <strong>unique<\/strong> because it <strong>does not contain erotic sculptures.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Architecture<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Temple style:<\/strong> The Khajuraho temples are built in the<strong> Nagara style<\/strong> of North Indian temple architecture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Temple Platform:<\/strong> Each temple stands on a highly <strong>ornate terraced platform called jagati<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shikhara:<\/strong> The <strong>sanctum<\/strong> is crowned by a <strong>shikhara<\/strong>, whose vertical form is enhanced by a <strong>series of miniature spires<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Temple Layout:<\/strong> The temples follow an <strong>axial plan consisting of ardhamandapa, mandapa, antarala, and garbhagriha,<\/strong> arranged in a <strong>hierarchical sequence.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Additional Features:<\/strong> Many temples include <strong>transepts<\/strong>, projecting <strong>windows<\/strong>, and a <strong>circumambulatory path<\/strong> around the sanctum.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Panchayatana Type:<\/strong> Some temples follow <strong>the Panchayatana plan, with four subsidiary shrines around the main shrine.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Building Material:<\/strong> Most temples were constructed using <strong>light-coloured sandstone from the Panna region,<\/strong> while <strong>some smaller structures used granite.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Orientation<\/strong>: Most temples face<strong> east<\/strong> so that the <strong>rising sun illuminates<\/strong> the temple entrance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sculpture<\/strong>: The Khajuraho temples are renowned for their rich sculptural tradition, which is harmoniously integrated with the temple architecture.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Themes Depicted:<\/strong> The sculptures portray <strong>Hindu gods and goddesses, mythological stories, acts of worship,<\/strong> and various sacred and secular themes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social Life Representation:<\/strong> The carvings depict <strong>teachers and disciples<\/strong>, <strong>dancers, musicians, ascetics, domestic scenes<\/strong>, and other aspects of daily life.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Celestial Figures:<\/strong> Special emphasis was given to the representation of <strong>celestial women such as apsaras and surasundaris.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Erotic Sculptures:<\/strong> Erotic sculptures form an important part of the sculptural programme and are associated with <strong>ideas of female beauty, fertility, and human life.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Management and Protection:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ownership and Management:<\/strong> The monuments are <strong>owned by the Government of India<\/strong> and are <strong>managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Legal Protection:<\/strong> The site is protected under the <strong>Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act, 1958<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Yoga Mahotsav 2026 was organised at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Western Group of Temples, Khajuraho, marking the 25-day countdown to International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026.
