
{"id":364124,"date":"2026-06-02T14:59:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T09:29:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=364124"},"modified":"2026-06-02T14:59:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T09:29:12","slug":"indias-18th-railway-zone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-18th-railway-zone\/","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s 18th Railway Zone"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> Recently, the 18th Zone of Indian Railways, South Coast Railway (SCoR), formally commenced operations with Visakhapatnam as its headquarters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\"><strong>About India\u2019s 18th Railway Zone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 281px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bsmedia.business-standard.com\/_media\/bs\/img\/article\/2026-05\/06\/full\/1778091534-387.JPG?resize=281%2C310&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"India\u2019s 18th Railway Zone\" width=\"281\" height=\"310\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Ministry of railways<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The newly created <strong>South Coast Railway (SCoR) Zone<\/strong> has been operational since 1st June 2026.<\/li>\n<li>It has been created by exercising powers <strong>conferred by sub-section (4) of Section 3 of the Railways Act, 1989 (No.24 of 1989).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The existing<strong> Waltair Division of East Coast Railway<\/strong> will be bifurcated into two parts.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>One part<\/strong> will remain under the <strong>existing East Coast Railway<\/strong> and<strong> will be renamed <\/strong>as the new<strong> Rayagada Division.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>remaining portion<\/strong> of the <strong>Waltair Division will <\/strong>become part of the<strong> newly created South Coast Railway (SCoR) Zone<\/strong> and will be renamed as the<strong> Visakhapatnam Division.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>About South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone:<\/strong> It\u00a0has been formed through the reorganisation of <strong>parts of the erstwhile South Central Railway (SCR) and East Coast Railway (ECoR) zones.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It covers a vast rail network across <strong>Andhra Pradesh<\/strong> and also serves <strong>parts of Telangana and\u00a0Tamil Nadu<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It will consist of <strong>four divisions:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Visakhapatnam (newly reorganised), Vijayawada, Guntur and Guntakal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is expected to<strong> improve operational efficiency, strengthen passenger train services, enhance freight movement and facilitate faster execution of railway infrastructure<\/strong> and capacity expansion projects across the region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance:<\/strong> It will play a crucial role in <strong>improving cargo movement and multimodal logistics<\/strong> for major <strong>ports<\/strong> including: <strong>Visakhapatnam Port, Gangavaram Port, Krishnapatnam Port, Kakinada Port and the upcoming Mulapeta Port.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Note:<\/strong> With the operationalization of the SCoR, <strong>the total number of railway zones in the country increases to 18.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\"><strong>About Different Railway Zones in India and Their Headquarters<\/strong><\/h2>\n<table style=\"height: 600px;
