While policy interventions have successfully stimulated demand for EVs, ensuring secure and resilient supply chains has become essential for sustaining long-term growth and reducing external vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>Why Strengthening EV Supply Chains is Necessary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> To Reduce Import Dependence<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>India is gradually reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels.<\/li>\n<li>However, the country is becoming increasingly dependent on imported lithium-ion batteries and battery components.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> To Ensure Energy Security<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>Excessive reliance on foreign suppliers can expose India to supply disruptions and geopolitical risks.<\/li>\n<li>A strong domestic supply chain can enhance India&#8217;s energy security and strategic autonomy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> To Support Sustainable EV Growth<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>Rapid EV adoption requires a stable supply of batteries and critical components.<\/li>\n<li>Domestic manufacturing can support uninterrupted growth of the EV sector.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong> To Enhance Industrial Competitiveness: <\/strong>A robust EV ecosystem can create jobs, promote innovation, and strengthen India&#8217;s manufacturing capabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>Challenges in India&#8217;s EV Supply Chains<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Limited Domestic Manufacturing Capacity<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>Although 40 GWh of battery manufacturing capacity has been allocated under the ACC Battery PLI Scheme, only around 1 GWh has become operational so far.<\/li>\n<li>As a result, domestic production remains insufficient to meet growing demand.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Heavy Dependence on Imported Batteries<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>A large share of batteries used in Indian EVs is imported from global manufacturers.<\/li>\n<li>Chinese firms continue to play a significant role in supplying battery cells.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Concentrated Global Supply Chains<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>The global battery supply chain remains heavily influenced by China.<\/li>\n<li>Trade restrictions, technology controls, and export-related measures can affect supply availability.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong> Geopolitical Uncertainties<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>Conflicts and instability in different regions can disrupt transportation routes and supply chains.<\/li>\n<li>Such disruptions can increase production costs and delay deliveries.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong> Rising Battery Costs<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>Higher battery costs make EVs more expensive for consumers.<\/li>\n<li>This can delay price parity between EVs and conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong> Dependence on a Single Technology<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>Excessive reliance on lithium-ion batteries increases technological and supply-chain risks.<\/li>\n<li>Any disruption in lithium supply can affect the entire EV ecosystem.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> India should diversify battery sourcing strategies.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>The country should adopt a &#8220;China+1&#8221;
