It was named after Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\"><b>About Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali<\/b><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.indianexpress.com\/2026\/06\/barkatullah-Bhopali-1600.jpg?resize=514%2C289&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali\" width=\"514\" height=\"289\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: IE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maulana Barkatullah Bhopal<\/span><b>i was a nationalist, renowned scholar, and the first Prime Minister of India\u2019s first provisional government-in-exile.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Birth:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He was <\/span><b>born in Bhopal in 1854<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Life:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He was a <strong>meritorious student and went to Bombay and London for studies.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He then <strong>started teaching in Liverpool<\/strong>, where he came into contact with Indian revolutionaries.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His <strong>articles and speeches attracted the negative attention of the British government,<\/strong> after which<strong> he left for the U.S.A in 1899.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In U.S.A, he corresponded with the freedom fighter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/eminent-freedom-fighters-and-personalities-of-up\/\">Maulana Hasrat Mohani<\/a> (who coined the slogan <\/strong><\/span><strong><i>Inquilab Zindabad<\/i>).\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He <strong>devoted his life to working for India\u2019s freedom abroad.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Ideology: <\/b>He believed that<b> India could only be free if all its communities stood together. <\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>He worked closely with Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and people from every region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Activities:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He travelled to various<strong> countries<\/strong> such as Japan, England, U.S.A, Germany, Russia and Afghanistan, <\/span>creating<b> awareness <\/b>for and<b> building alliances <\/b>to usher in India\u2019s independence.\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During <strong>World War I, <\/strong>Barkatullah and his associates<strong> travelled to Germany<\/strong> and<strong> tried to convince Indian soldiers<\/strong> captured by the Germans<strong> to form an army to fight the British.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also <\/span><b>worked prominently for the Ghadar Party,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> founded by <strong>Lala Har Dayal in 1913<\/strong>, which wanted to win India\u2019s independence through armed struggle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He, along with some associates,<\/span><b> most notably Raja Mahendra Pratap, set up India\u2019s first \u2018government in exile\u2019 in Kabul in 1915.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four years later, <strong>the leaders of this \u2018government\u2019 travelled to Moscow to meet Vladimir Lenin<\/strong>, the head of government of Soviet Russia.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the British victory in the<strong> First World War, the Indian revolutionaries\u2019 plans suffered<\/strong> major reverses. <\/span><b>However, Barkatullah kept travelling to Brussels, Switzerland, France, etc., <\/b>working for his cause.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He <\/span><b>spent most of his life in exile.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He <strong>connected with anti\u2011colonial movements around the world<\/strong> and became one of the most well\u2011known<strong> Indian revolutionaries of his time.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Death: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He died in<\/span><b> 1927 in the U.S.A.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Legacy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In his<\/span><b> recognition, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Barkatullah University in Bhopal <\/strong><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was named after him<\/span> in <b>1988.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The executive council of Bhopal\u2019s Barkatullah University has passed a proposal to change its name to Vagdevi Bhojpal University.
