  • It is a flagship initiative <\/strong>to provide free, comprehensive antenatal care to pregnant women,<\/strong> particularly those in their second and third trimesters,<\/strong> at designated government health facilities on the 9th of every month.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • It is a vital pillar of the Government’s Continuum of Care approach under the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) Strategy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Launched by<\/td>\nIt was launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare <\/strong>in 2016.\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Aim<\/td>\nIt aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality<\/strong>\u00a0by facilitating\u00a0early detection and prompt management of high-risk pregnancies<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Objective<\/td>\n\n
    \n
  • It is to ensure that every pregnant woman receives at least one check-up by a physician\/specialist<\/strong>\u00a0during the second or third trimester.<\/li>\n
  • It is to improve the quality of care<\/strong>\u00a0during antenatal visits.<\/li>\n
  • It is to identify and manage high-risk pregnancies (HRP)<\/strong>\u00a0at an early stage.<\/li>\n
  • It is to ensure appropriate birth planning<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0complication readiness<\/strong>\u00a0for each pregnant woman.<\/li>\n
  • It also ensures appropriate management<\/strong>\u00a0of women with malnutrition.<\/li>\n
  • It provides special focus on adolescent and early pregnancies.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Components of service<\/td>\n\n
    \n
  • The PMSMA service package includes\n
      \n
    • Clinical examinations<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Laboratory investigations (blood and urine tests)<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Ultrasonography<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Medicines, and <\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Counselling on nutrition, birth planning, and safe pregnancy practices.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Key Features of PMSMA<\/td>\n\n
    \n
  • Comprehensive Antenatal Care:<\/strong> Minimum\u00a0one comprehensive and quality antenatal checkup <\/strong>by an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist or Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC).\n
      \n
    • Providing Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) \/ Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) trained doctor<\/strong>\u00a0during the second or third trimester.<\/li>\n
    • Mobilising the pregnant women<\/strong> for specialist Antenatal care services at Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan clinics\/ designated government health facility centre.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • High-Risk Pregnancy (HRP): HRP identification<\/strong> by screening for 25 high-risk factors and\u00a0management at an early stage.<\/strong>\n
        \n
      • A sticker indicating the condition and risk factor of pregnant women is added to Mother and Child Protection cards for each visit:<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • Linking of HRPs<\/strong>\u00a0to the nearest first referral unit (FRU) for a safe delivery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Minimum Package of Services:<\/strong><\/span> A minimum package of investigations and medicines, <\/strong>such as Iron Folic Acid and calcium supplements, is provided to all pregnant women<\/strong> at Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan clinics.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Doctor Volunteer System:<\/strong> The initiative actively welcomes OB-GYN specialists, radiologists, and physicians from the private sector<\/strong> to volunteer their time on the 9th of every month.<\/li>\n
      • Nutrition focus: Counselling on nutrition <\/strong>along with appropriate\u00a0birth planning and complication readiness<\/strong>\u00a0for each pregnant woman.<\/li>\n
      • Note:<\/strong> The E-PMSMA strategy was rolled out in\u00a0January 2022<\/strong>\u00a0to ensure tracing and tracking of\u00a0High-Risk Pregnant (HRP)\u00a0<\/strong>women till a safe delivery is achieved by provisioning\u00a0financial incentivization<\/strong>\u00a0for the identified HRP women and accompanying\u00a0Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA)<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0extra 3 visits<\/strong>\u00a0over and above the PMSMA visit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
