edition of the GPI.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Key findings:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Top<\/strong><b> in ranking:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Global Peace Index 2026 has been released, with<\/span><b> Iceland ranking as the world&#8217;s most peaceful country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the 18th consecutive year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Findings related to India: India has fallen to 127th place, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largely due to rising cross-border tensions and persistent internal conflicts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Findings related to neighbouring country: Sri Lanka ranks 67th <\/b>in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI),<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> securing the<\/span><b> second position in South Asia <\/b>and marking one of the most significant improvements in the region.<\/li>\n<li><b>Rising Global Instability: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report <\/span>reveals that<b> world struggling with the economic consequences of a record-high number of conflicts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are increasingly interconnected and difficult to resolve.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This deterioration is driven by a<\/span> profound geopolitical shift, characterized by the rising influence of middle powers and the waning strength of traditional European powers <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">known as the <strong>\u201cGreat Fragmentation.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is <\/span><b>also accompanied by a rapid technological revolution in warfare<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is leaving international law and diplomacy far behind.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>AI on the Battlefield: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also reveals that, for the first time in history, <\/span><b>machines can make life-and-death combat decisions faster than humans can review them, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span> there are very<b> few rules to control <\/b>their use.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><b>Drone Warfare Expansion: Drone attacks <\/b>rose by over<b> 11,500% between 2018 and 2025<\/b>, while <strong>AI has compressed targeting times from one day to seconds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>Historic Decline in Peace: <\/b>Global peace is at its<b> lowest level <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since the inception of the Index, while the conditions that precede conflict are the worst since WWII<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>99 countries witnessed a deterioration in peacefulness in the past year,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the highest number since the inception of the Index 20 years ago.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>119 countries are now less peaceful than in 2007.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Surge in External Conflicts: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span>number of countries engaged in <b>external conflict <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has nearly <strong>double<\/strong><\/span><b>d from 59 in 2008 to 103 <\/b>in the 2026 GPI.<\/li>\n<li><b>Record Conflict Deaths: Deaths <\/b>from global conflict remain at <b>historic highs,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with over 181,000 killed in 2025, a six-fold increase since 2008.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Economic Cost of Violence: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The global <\/span><b>economic impact of violence increased by 3.2% to US$21.81 trillion in 2025, equivalent to 10.5% of global GDP.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Military Spending at Record Levels: <\/b>Global military<strong> spending hit a record US$2.9 trillion in 2025,<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> driven largely by
