Incredible India<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Masroor Rock-Cut Temples<\/strong> are an <strong>early 8th-century complex of 15 monolithic Hindu temples<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: The temple complex is situated in the <strong>Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh<\/strong>, in the <strong>Kangra Valley of the Beas River<\/strong> near <strong>Masroor village<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Known as:<\/strong> The temples are often referred to as the \u201c<strong>Ellora of Himachal\u201d, \u201cHimalayan Pyramid\u201d, <\/strong>and<strong> \u201cEllora of the Himalayas.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Architecture and Layout:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Style of Architecture:<\/strong> The complex is <strong>built in the North Indian Nagara style<\/strong> and is a <strong>rare monolithic rock-cut temple complex<\/strong> with a <strong>shikhara (spire<\/strong>) in Northern India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Layout and Grid:<\/strong> The <strong>15-monument temple complex<\/strong> follows a <strong>symmetrical square grid<\/strong>, where the central shrine is surrounded by smaller shrines arranged in a <strong>mandala pattern.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Thakurdwara Shrine<\/strong>: The <strong>central Thakurdwara shrine<\/strong> is completely excavated inside to form a <strong>functional garbhagriha<\/strong>, unlike the surrounding shrines.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Directional Alignment:<\/strong> The temple complex <strong>faces northeast<\/strong> and is <strong>aligned toward the snow-clad Dhauladhar mountain range<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Entrances<\/strong>: The complex has <strong>three completed entrances<\/strong> facing the <strong>northeast, southeast, and northwest,<\/strong> while a <strong>fourth western entrance remained unfinished.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sacred Water Pool:<\/strong> A large sacred <strong>quadrilateral water pool<\/strong> is located directly in front of the temple complex.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Iconography<\/strong>: The inner sanctum contains stone idols of <strong>Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita,<\/strong> while reliefs of <strong>Shiva<\/strong> indicate an <strong>earlier dedication to Mahadeva<span style=\"font-family: var(--global--font-secondary);
