
{"id":365289,"date":"2026-06-16T13:59:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T08:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=365289"},"modified":"2026-06-16T14:54:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T09:24:23","slug":"energy-storage-technologies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/energy-storage-technologies\/","title":{"rendered":"Energy Storage Technologies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved a 250 MW solar project with Battery Energy Storage System in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\">About Energy Storage Technologies<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Energy storage technologies store excess renewable electricity<\/strong> and <strong>supply it later when demand rises<\/strong> and power generation remains low.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Status of Energy Storage Capacity:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Global Leader<\/strong>: <strong>China continues to dominate energy storage<\/strong> deployment, <strong>accounting for about 60% of new installations in 2025,<\/strong> followed by the <strong>United States at 16%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Major Technologies:<\/strong> Globally, <strong>Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)<\/strong> are the two most widely deployed electricity storage technologies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India\u2019s Current Capacity:<\/strong> India has <strong>approximately 7 GW of operational Pumped Storage Project (PSP) capacity<\/strong> and <strong>less than 1 GW of operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Future Target:<\/strong> India has planned a total energy storage capacity of 174 GW, including <strong>80 GW of BESS and 94 GW of Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS)<\/strong>, to support 509 GW of solar capacity and 155 GW of wind capacity by 2036.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Types of Energy Storage Technology:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS):<\/strong> This technology <strong>uses surplus electricity to pump water from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir<\/strong>. When demand increases, the stored water is released through turbines to generate electricity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Battery Energy Storage System (BESS):<\/strong> This technology <strong>stores electricity chemically and releases it when required<\/strong>. Lithium-ion batteries, especially Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, are widely used because of their high efficiency, lower costs, and long operational life.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Concentrating Solar-Thermal Storage:<\/strong> This technology <strong>uses mirrors to focus sunlight onto a receiver.<\/strong> The generated heat is stored using materials such as molten salt and later used to produce electricity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compressed-Air Energy Storage:<\/strong> This technology stores compressed air in underground caverns or tanks and releases it later to drive turbines for electricity generation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flywheel and Gravity Energy Storage:<\/strong> <strong>Flywheel systems store electricity as rotational energy<\/strong>, while <strong>gravity systems store energy by lifting heavy weights<\/strong> and generating electricity when the weights are lowered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>India\u2019s Initiatives:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) PLI Scheme:<\/strong> This Rs.18,100 crore scheme <strong>aims to establish 50 GWh of domestic battery manufacturing<\/strong> capacity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme:<\/strong> This scheme provides <strong>financial support to improve the commercial viability of BESS projects.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy Storage Obligations (ESO)<\/strong>: DISCOMs are required to <strong>source a specified share of electricity from storage-backed systems<\/strong>, reaching 4% by 2030.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Round-the-Clock (RTC) and FDRE Tenders:<\/strong> Renewable energy agencies are <strong>promoting contracts that require developers to integrate battery storage for reliable power supply.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>ISTS Charges Waiver: <\/strong>The government has <strong>waived inter-state transmission system (ISTS) charges for electricity used by energy storage systems,<\/strong> making it cheaper to transport stored green energy across states.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Battery Storage Vision:<\/strong> Under the India Battery Storage Vision 2047<em>,<\/em> <strong>ministries are developing a policy framework to provide financial support and interest subventions<\/strong> for long-duration energy storage technologies.<span style=\"font-family: var(--list--font-family); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\"><br \/>\n<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved a 250 MW solar project with Battery Energy Storage System in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh.
