{"id":365368,"date":"2026-06-17T14:55:42","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T09:25:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=365368"},"modified":"2026-06-17T14:55:42","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T09:25:42","slug":"national-immunisation-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-immunisation-program\/","title":{"rendered":"National Immunisation Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><b>News: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The HPV vaccine is likely to be included in the National Immunisation Program after 2027.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\"><b>About the National Immunisation Program<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India&#8217;s National Immunisation Program is officially known as the <\/span><b>Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP).<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nodal ministry:<\/strong> It is a <strong>flagship initiative<\/strong> of the <strong>Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>aimed at providing free vaccination to children and pregnant wome<\/strong>n against preventable diseases.<\/li>\n<li><strong>History:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expanded Programme on Immunisation<\/strong> was launched in 1978.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was renamed as the <\/span><b>Universal Immunisation Programme in 1985.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1992<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the<\/span><b> UIP was incorporated into the Child Survival and Safe Motherhood Programme <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and later, in <\/span><b>1997<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, into the<\/span><b> National Reproductive and Child Health Programme.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since <\/span><b>2005, under the National Rural Health Mission,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the UIP has become a central component of India&#8217;s public health efforts, focusing on ensuring that vaccines reach every child, even in the most remote parts of the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Features<\/strong>:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the <\/span><b>most cost-effective public health interventions and is largely responsible for the reduction of the vaccine-preventable<\/b> <b>under-5 mortality rate.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under UIP, immunisation is provided free of cost against <\/span><b>12 vaccine-preventable diseases:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nationally against 9 diseases &#8211; <\/span><b>Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Rubella, severe form of Childhood Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B and Meningitis &amp; Pneumonia caused by Hemophilus Influenza type B<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sub-nationally against 3 diseases<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><b>Rotavirus diarrhoea, Pneumococcal Pneumonia and Japanese Encephalitis. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese Encephalitis vaccine is provided <strong>only in endemic districts declared by the government.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A child is said to be fully immunised if the child receives all due vaccines as per the national immunisation schedule<\/span><b> within 1st year age of child.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Vaccines covered:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It covers vaccines such as<\/span><b> Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV), Rotavirus vaccine (RVV), Measles Rubella (MR) vaccine, Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) and Tetanus and adult diphtheria (Td) vaccine, etc<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>About U-WIN Portal: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It provides a <\/span><b>fully digitised record of vaccination for pregnant women and children from birth to 17 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the Universal Immunisation Programme.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It aims <strong>to streamline vaccine delivery and record-keeping<\/strong>, ensuring that every individual can easily access and manage their immunisation records.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Current status:<\/strong> It has reached <strong>about 2.9 crore pregnant women and 2.54 crore newborns<\/strong> annually, free of cost.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-style: solid;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\"><b>About Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a<strong> highly prevalent sexually transmitted virus in women.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Chronic infection with high-risk oncogenic types, particularly types 16 and 18, can cause abnormal cell changes<\/strong> in the cervix that may advance to cervical cancer over a 10 to 15-year period.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaccine is a <strong>non-live recombinant platform that trains the immune system using virus-like particles (VLPs).\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Gardasil-4 extends protection across both oncogenic variants<\/strong> (16 and 18) and types 6 and 11, which cause genital warts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific evidence shows that even<strong> a single dose<\/strong> can <strong>protect around 85\u201390 per cent.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/human-papillomavirus-hpv-vaccination-programme\/\">Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Programme<\/a> is running nationwide to provide a free HPV vaccination to adolescent girls.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The HPV vaccine is likely to be included in the National Immunisation Program after 2027.
