Respect. \u201cRestore\u201d. <\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It calls for<\/span><b> greater recognition of the economic, ecological and cultural value of rangelands, respect for their traditional stewards and stronger investment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in restoring degraded rangelands.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\"><b>About United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the<\/span><b> sole legally binding international agreement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> linking environment and development to sustainable land management.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Establish year:<\/strong> It was <\/span><b>established in 1994.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Parties: 197 countries and the European Union are now Parties to the Convention.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>India signed the UNCCD in October 1994 and ratified it in December 1996. <\/b><b>MoEF is the National Coordinating Agency <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the implementation of the UNCCD in the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Governing body:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <strong>Conference of the Parties (COP),<\/strong> which is the supreme governing body.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Purpose: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Convention addresses<\/span><b> the arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, known as the drylands, where some of the most vulnerable ecosystems and peoples can be found.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parties to the convention work togethe<\/span><b>r to improve the living conditions for people in drylands, to maintain and restore land and soil productivity, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> to mitigate the effects of drought.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>facilitates cooperation between developed and developing countries, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particularly around knowledge and technology transfer for sustainable land management.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u00a0 collaborates closely with the other<\/span><b> two Rio Conventions\u2013 The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India, for the first time, hosted the<\/span><b> 14th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP-14) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in September 2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<h2><b>About Rageland<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Definition:<\/strong> The UNCCD report defines<strong> rangelands as natural or semi-natural ecosystems that are grazed by livestock or wild animals.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rangelands contain vegetation <\/span><b>such as grasses, shrubs, bushes, open forests, and agroforestry systems (land which contains trees and crops or pastures).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Current status of Rageland:<\/strong> Currently, rangelands<strong> cover 80 million sq km of Earth\u2019s terrestrial surface area<\/strong> (over half of Earth\u2019s land), and are <strong>thus the largest land cover or land use type in the world.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Role:<\/strong> <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They act as <strong>carbon sinks (which absorb more carbon from the atmosphere than they release), storehouses of freshwater, and prevent desertification of land.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millions of people worldwide depend on rangelands for food security and livelihoods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rangelands generate <strong>16% of global food production and 70% of feed for domesticated herbivores, most significantly in Africa and South America<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Status in India:<\/strong> In India, rangelands occupy about 1.21 million sq km, from the Thar Desert to Himalayan meadows, as per the UNCCD report.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought was recently observed to raise awareness and promote action against desertification, land degradation and drought About World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year on 17 June under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
