It is initially known as the<strong> South Koel River in its upper reaches.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Drainage:<\/strong> The river basin traverses the states of <strong data-start=\"96\" data-end=\"135\">Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Course of the river:<\/strong> After meeting with the<strong> Sankh River at Rourkela,<\/strong> it is known as the <strong>Brahmani River<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It <strong>generally flows south-southeast past Bonaigarh and Talcher in Odisha<\/strong> before t<strong>urning east to merge with the northern branches of the Mahanadi River,<\/strong> which<strong> eventually drains into the Bay of Bengal at Palmyras Point, Odisha.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gorge formation:<\/strong> It also forms a <strong>minor gorge at Rengali (Angul district of Odisha).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Total Length:<\/strong> Its total length is <strong>about 799 km.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Boundary<\/strong>: The basin is bounded in the <strong>North by the Chhotanagpur Plateau, in the West and South by the Mahanadi basin and in the East by the Bay of Bengal.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tributaries:<\/strong> The major tributaries of the river include the <strong data-start=\"92\" data-end=\"118\">Sankh, Tikra, and Karo<\/strong> rivers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Delta formation:<\/strong> Together with the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/mahanadi-river\/\">Mahanadi<\/a> and Baitarani rivers<\/strong>,<strong> it forms the Brahmani delta<\/strong> before<strong> emptying into the<\/strong> <strong>Bay of Bengal.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Brahmani delta is the site of the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong>, known for its estuarine crocodiles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dams situated:<\/strong> It supports irrigation through dams and canals like the<strong> Rengali Dam and Samal Barrage<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historical significance:<\/strong> \u00a0Historically, its origin is linked to the <strong>legend of Ved Vyasa.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: A recent\u00a0study showed that Microscopic plastic pollution is infiltrating the pristine habitats of India\u2019s Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary, carrying a toxic cargo of heavy metals into the Brahmani River.
