Therefore, <strong>deuterium is twice as heavy as hydrogen.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Stronger Chemical Bonds<\/strong>: When deuterium replaces hydrogen in a compound, <strong>it forms stronger chemical bonds<\/strong> <strong>than those formed by normal hydrogen.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Kinetic Isotope Effect:<\/strong> These stronger bonds <strong>require more energy to break.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>As a result, <strong>chemical and metabolic reactions <\/strong>involving deuterated compounds <strong>occur more slowly<\/strong> <strong>without changing their basic chemical structure.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Applications:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>NMR Spectroscopy:<\/strong> Deuterated compounds are used in <strong>Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Deuterium provides distinct peaks in NMR spectra, <strong>improves resolution, and helps differentiate between hydrogen and deuterium in a sample.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pharmaceutical Research:<\/strong> Deuterated drugs generally metabolize more slowly while retaining their effectiveness.\n<ul>\n<li>This can <strong>improve drug half-life and reduce unwanted byproducts.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diagnostics and Medical Research:<\/strong> Hospitals and universities use deuterated compounds in <strong>medical research, including cancer studies and metabolic investigations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hydrology and Environmental Studies:<\/strong> Deuterium is <strong>used as a tracer for water mapping, groundwater studies, wastewater analysis, and environmental monitoring.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Semiconductors and Fibre Optics:<\/strong> Deuterium <strong>improves the lifespan<\/strong> of semiconductors and microchips<strong> by reducing chemical erosion<\/strong> and also extends the life of fibre-optic cables.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News:\u00a0The Department of Atomic Energy inaugurated the Versatile Deuterated Compounds Production Plant at Vadodara on 21 June 2026.
