India Today<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Battle of Plassey<\/strong> was <strong>fought on 23 June 1757 <\/strong>between the <strong>British East India Company,<\/strong> led by <strong>Robert Clive, <\/strong>and<strong> Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah of Bengal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: The battle was fought <strong>near Palashi (Plassey) in present-day Nadia district of West Bengal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mughal Emperor:<\/strong> <strong>Alamgir II<\/strong> was the Mughal Emperor when the Battle of Plassey was fought.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Causes of the Conflict:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Misuse of Dastaks:<\/strong> The East India Company misused <strong>the dastaks (duty-free trade permits) granted to it for trade in Bengal.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Company&#8217;s privileged position<\/strong> and the <strong>loss of revenue<\/strong> caused to the Bengal administration created resentment and increased tensions between the Nawab and the Company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unsanctioned Fortifications:<\/strong> The Company strengthened the fortifications of<strong> Fort William in Calcutta without <\/strong>the<strong> permission<\/strong> of Siraj-ud-Daulah, challenging his authority.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asylum to Political Fugitives:<\/strong> The <strong>Company gave shelter to Krishna Ballabh,<\/strong> whom the Nawab had charged with fraud, creating further tension.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Black Hole Tragedy:<\/strong> Siraj-ud-Daulah <strong>captured Calcutta in June 1756<\/strong> after the East India Company ignored his warnings.\n<ul>\n<li>Following the capture, several British officials and soldiers were reportedly confined in <strong>a small and poorly ventilated room.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">According to <strong>British accounts,<\/strong> many <strong>prisoners died <\/strong>due to <strong>overcrowding, heat, and lack of fresh air. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The incident became <strong>known as the Black Hole Tragedy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>However, the event remains <strong>controversial<\/strong>, and the East India Company later <strong>used it to justify military action against the Nawab.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Course of the Battle:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Odds:<\/strong> Siraj-ud-Daulah\u2019s army had about<strong> 50,000 men<\/strong> and around <strong>50 field guns<\/strong>, while <strong>Clive commanded only 3,000 men and 10 field guns.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Betrayal:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mir Jafar (Commander-in-Chief):<\/strong> He entered into a <strong>secret understanding with the British<\/strong> and kept the largest contingent of the Nawab&#8217;s army inactive during the battle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rai Durlabh (Army General and Court Official)<\/strong>: He brought his forces to the battlefield but <strong>deliberately did not participate in the fighting.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jagat Seths (Banking Family):<\/strong> They supported the conspiracy against Siraj-ud-Daulah and <strong>backed the plan to replace him with Mir Jafar.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Turning Point:<\/strong> A sudden <strong>heavy downpour weakened the Nawab\u2019s artillery,<\/strong> while the British protected their ammunition and continued fighting effectively.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Climax:<\/strong> The battle ended in <strong>Robert Clive\u2019s victory<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Siraj-ud-Daulah fled but was <strong>later captured and put to death.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impacts<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Political Transformation:<\/strong> <strong>Mir Jafar became Nawab of Bengal<\/strong> but functioned largely as a <strong>puppet ruler under the Company\u2019s influence.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>First Step to Empire:<\/strong> The victory enabled the Company to move beyond trade and gain political influence in Bengal.<\/li>\n<li>Bengal became the <strong>first base of the Company\u2019s expanding power across India<\/strong>, laying the foundation of British colonial dominance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News:\u00a0June 23, 2026 marks 269 years of the Battle of Plassey, a turning point in British expansion in India.
