Wikipedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The Vaigai River is the<strong> major river that flows in Tamil Nadu.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is also called\u00a0<strong>Kritamaala.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"18kkrk1\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"83\"><strong>Origin:<\/strong> It\u00a0rises in the <strong data-start=\"36\" data-end=\"56\">Varushanad Hills<\/strong> of western <strong data-start=\"68\" data-end=\"82\">Tamil Nadu<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"orhm1x\" data-start=\"84\" data-end=\"188\"><strong>Course of river:<\/strong> It initially flows in a <strong data-start=\"110\" data-end=\"137\">northeasterly direction<\/strong> through the <strong data-start=\"150\" data-end=\"160\">Kambam<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"165\" data-end=\"179\">Varushanad<\/strong> valleys.\n<ul>\n<li data-section-id=\"1v17pvz\" data-start=\"189\" data-end=\"292\">In its <strong>central reaches, the river flows eastward<\/strong> into the <strong data-start=\"249\" data-end=\"269\">Vaigai Reservoir<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"273\" data-end=\"291\">Narasingapuram<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1bwwqku\" data-start=\"293\" data-end=\"382\">The river changes its course near <strong data-start=\"300\" data-end=\"315\">Sholavandan <\/strong>and bends towards the <strong data-start=\"368\" data-end=\"381\">southeast<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1xau9t\" data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"532\" data-is-last-node=\"\">It passes through <strong data-start=\"403\" data-end=\"414\">Madurai<\/strong> before finally emptying into the <strong data-start=\"448\" data-end=\"463\">Palk Strait.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fed by:<\/strong> It gets major feed from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/periyar-river-2\/\">Periyar Dam<\/a> in Kerala.<\/strong> Water from the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/periyar-river\/\"><strong data-start=\"114\" data-end=\"131\">Periyar River<\/strong> <\/a>is diverted to the <strong data-start=\"151\" data-end=\"167\">Vaigai River<\/strong> through a tunnel across the <strong data-start=\"196\" data-end=\"213\">Western Ghats<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tributaries:<\/strong> The main tributaries are the<strong> Suruliyaru, Mullaiyaaru, Varaganadi and Manjalaru.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Length:<\/strong> It\u00a0is <strong data-start=\"26\" data-end=\"41\">258 km long<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dam on the river:<\/strong> The Vaigai Dam is a <strong>hydroelectric and multipurpose dam<\/strong> built across the<strong> Vaigai River near Andipatti in Tamil Nadu.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Vattaparai Falls<\/strong>\u00a0are also located on this river.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historic significance: <\/strong>It\u00a0was the river that<strong> flowed through the city of Madurai, the capital of the ancient and prosperous Pandya kingdom<\/strong> located in southern Tamil Nadu.\n<ul>\n<li>It\u00a0served as a direct water route connecting <strong>Madurai<\/strong> to the ancient port of <strong>Alagankulam<\/strong>, facilitating trade and transport.<\/li>\n<li>The river also finds a mention i<strong>n the Sangam literature dated to 300 before the Common Era (BCE<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>The story of Vaigai is told in the <strong>Thiruvilayadal Puranam<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance:\u00a0<\/strong>The river <strong>fulfils the drinking water requirement of five districts of Tamil Nadu,<\/strong> namely<strong> Theni, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai and Dindigul.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The roadside on the southern bank of the Vaigai River has turned into a dumping ground, with various types of waste littering both the roadside and the riverbank.
