{"id":36637,"date":"2018-11-06T17:12:27","date_gmt":"2018-11-06T11:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=36637"},"modified":"2018-11-09T10:02:53","modified_gmt":"2018-11-09T04:32:53","slug":"the-ozone-hole-is-recovering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-ozone-hole-is-recovering\/","title":{"rendered":"The ozone hole is recovering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-features\/tp-sundaymagazine\/the-ozone-hole-is-recovering\/article22439913.ece\"><strong>The ozone hole is recovering<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A recent study by NASA has confirmed the recovery of the ozone layer due to the absence of chlorine from Chlorofluorocarbon(CFC) in the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Findings of UN study:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The study published in Geophysical Research Letters journal has confirmed the phenomenon by mapping the chemical composition of the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<li>The study revealed that<strong> chlorine levels declined by 0.8% each yea<\/strong>r between 2005 and 2016 and speculates that it could be the effect of the worldwide ban on the use of CFC.<\/li>\n<li>Previous research had hinted at the decrease in the depletion of ozone layer. Scientists believe that the ozone layer would <strong>fully recover by 2080.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>UN Findings:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>UN report<\/strong> also said that ozone in parts of the stratosphere has recovered at a rate of 1-3 per cent since 2000.<\/li>\n<li>At projected rates, Northern Hemisphere and mid-latitude ozone is scheduled to heal completely by the 2030s, followed by the Southern Hemisphere in the 2050s and polar regions by 2060.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Factors recovering Ozone Hole:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Montreal Protocol: <\/strong>It banned man-made gases that damage the fragile high-altitude ozone layer, found long-term decreases in the atmospheric abundance of controlled ozone-depleting substances and the ongoing recovery of stratospheric ozone.<\/li>\n<li>The Antarctic ozone hole was expected to gradually close, returning to 1980 levels in the 2060s, the report said.<\/li>\n<li>In 2019, the protocol is set to be strengthened with the ratification of the<strong> Kigali Agreement <\/strong>which limits the production of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), ozone safe compounds that are potent greenhouse gases.<\/li>\n<li>The writers of the report found that, if the Kigali Amendment is fully implemented, the world can<strong> avoid up to 0.4 per cent of global warming this century<\/strong>, meaning that it will play a major role in keeping the global temperature rise below 2\u00b0C.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong>Concerns:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>In the Arctic, annual variations were much larger, making it hard to confirm whether there had been a definite recovery in the layer since 2000.<\/li>\n<li>However, while most of the banned gases have been phased out, the report found at least one violation of the protocol, an<strong> unexpected increase<\/strong> in production and emissions of<strong> CFC-11 <\/strong>from eastern Asia since 2012.<\/li>\n<li>The report said the source country or countries had not yet been identified.<\/li>\n<li>The report noted that if CFC-11 emissions continued at the same rate, return of mid-latitude and polar ozone-depleting chemicals to their 1980 values would be delayed by about seven and 20 years, respectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36627\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/montreal.jpg?resize=632%2C130&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"632\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/montreal.jpg?w=632&amp;ssl=1 632w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/montreal.jpg?resize=150%2C31&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/montreal.jpg?resize=300%2C62&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ozone hole is recovering News: A recent study by NASA has confirmed the recovery of the ozone layer due to the absence of chlorine from Chlorofluorocarbon(CFC) in the atmosphere.
