Births after 3 December 2004 require mandatory consular registration.<\/li>\n<li><strong>By Registration:<\/strong> Eligible Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), spouses of Indian citizens, and other eligible persons can <strong>acquire citizenship through registration.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>By Naturalisation:<\/strong> Eligible foreign nationals can <strong>acquire citizenship after fulfilling the prescribed residency requirement, which is generally 12 years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amendments<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1986 Amendment:<\/strong> It <strong>ended unrestricted birthright citizenship<\/strong> by requiring <strong>at least one parent to be an Indian citizen<\/strong> for children born after the amendment came into force.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2003 Amendment:<\/strong> It further restricted citizenship by birth by providing that a <strong>child would not become a citizen if one parent was an illegal immigrant at the time of birth.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019:<\/strong> It <strong>reduced the residency requirement for specified persecuted minorities<\/strong> belonging to <strong>Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian<\/strong> communities from <strong>Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan<\/strong> who entered India on or before 31 December 2014.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News:\u00a0The US Supreme Court declared the Trump administration\u2019s executive order ending birthright citizenship unconstitutional and reaffirmed citizenship under the Fourteenth Amendment.
