
{"id":366914,"date":"2026-07-07T17:01:22","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T11:31:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=366914"},"modified":"2026-07-07T17:01:39","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T11:31:39","slug":"underwater-fiber-optic-sensing-system-ufoss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/underwater-fiber-optic-sensing-system-ufoss\/","title":{"rendered":"Underwater Fiber Optic Sensing System (UFOSS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: DRDO has invited industry partners to develop and deploy the Underwater Fiber Optic Sensing System (UFOSS) for continuous submarine surveillance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Underwater Fiber Optic Sensing System (UFOSS)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Underwater Fiber Optic Sensing System (UFOSS)<\/strong>: It is a <strong>fixed network of undersea sensors<\/strong> that <strong>provides round-the-clock monitoring of underwater submarine activity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Developed by:<\/strong> It is <strong>being developed by the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL)<\/strong>, the <strong>Defence Research and Development Organisation\u2019s (DRDO)<\/strong> premier underwater warfare laboratory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective<\/strong>: The system aims to <strong>strengthen underwater surveillance by continuously detecting submarine activity<\/strong> and <strong>supporting the Navy\u2019s anti-submarine warfare network.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Working Mechanism:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Seabed Sensor Network:<\/strong> The system uses <strong>seabed sensor array nodes<\/strong> connected through <strong>subsea fibre-optic cables to collect underwater data.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Data Transmission:<\/strong> The collected <strong>data is transmitted through a beach manhole to a shore station,<\/strong> where it is <strong>received, monitored, and analysed.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Continuous Monitoring<\/strong>: Unlike ships and aircraft that patrol only periodically, the <strong>system continuously monitors underwater activity and guides anti-submarine warfare assets<\/strong> towards potential contacts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Robust Underwater Design:<\/strong> The system uses durable underwater components, including <strong>sensor array nodes, junction boxes, and branching units,<\/strong> which are designed to withstand high pressure and seawater corrosion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Specialised Cable Deployment<\/strong>: The <strong>fibre-optic network will be deployed using Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)<\/strong>and <strong>cable burial ploughs<\/strong>, along with dedicated cable-laying ships, to install and protect the undersea infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Long Operational Life:<\/strong> The system is <strong>designed to operate continuously for 20 years<\/strong> by using reliable underwater components that can function without routine maintenance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consortium-Based Development:<\/strong> The project allows the lead system integrator to <strong>partner with up to five specialised engineering<\/strong> firms so that expertise in subsea cable manufacturing, marine surveys, and system integration can be brought together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: DRDO has invited industry partners to develop and deploy the Underwater Fiber Optic Sensing System (UFOSS) for continuous submarine surveillance.
