In 2026, the IMD reported a <strong>40% rainfall deficit in June<\/strong> and forecast <strong>below-normal rainfall in July<\/strong>, raising concerns about economic growth and food security.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>\u00a0Impact of a Poor Monsoon on India&#8217;s Economy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Decline in Agricultural Production:<\/strong> A poor monsoon reduces agricultural production and lowers the contribution of agriculture to the economy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fall in Rural Income and Demand:<\/strong> A weak monsoon reduces farm incomes, which may decline by up to <strong>10%<\/strong>, and weakens consumer demand in rural areas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rise in Food Inflation:<\/strong> Lower agricultural output increases food prices and leads to higher food inflation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impact on Livelihoods:<\/strong> Agriculture contributes about <strong>20% of Gross Value Added (GVA)<\/strong>, employs <strong>46% of the workforce<\/strong>, and supports nearly <strong>55% of India&#8217;s population<\/strong>. Therefore, a weak monsoon directly affects livelihoods.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slowdown in Rural Economy:<\/strong> Reduced rural demand negatively affects sectors such as construction, automobile sales, tractors, and real estate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lower Economic Growth:<\/strong> A combined El Ni\u00f1o and drought may reduce India&#8217;s GDP growth by <strong>20\u201365 basis points<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pressure on External Sector:<\/strong> Lower agricultural production may increase imports, widen the <strong>Current Account Deficit (CAD)<\/strong>, put pressure on the rupee, and reduce agricultural exports despite their strong growth in recent years.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>Impact of El Ni\u00f1o on Agriculture and Inflation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Several major droughts, including <strong>1972, 1982, 2009, and 2015<\/strong>, occurred during El Ni\u00f1o years.<\/li>\n<li>Since 2000, five out of six El Ni\u00f1o years experienced deficient rainfall.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>2009 and 2010<\/strong>, poor rainfall caused crop GVA to contract by <strong>2.5% and 3.2%<\/strong>, respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Food inflation reached double digits in 2009 because of lower agricultural output.<\/li>\n<li>In 2015, inflation remained moderate due to effective food management, restrained MSP hikes, and low global commodity prices.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>Is India Prepared for Another Weak Monsoon?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Around <strong>315 districts<\/strong> are vulnerable to poor monsoons.<\/li>\n<li>Out of these, <strong>111 districts across 12 States<\/strong> face high risk due to poor irrigation facilities.<\/li>\n<li>Reservoir storage is lower than last year and slightly below the normal level.<\/li>\n<li>Another consecutive weak monsoon could severely strain water resources.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>Measures to Drought-Proof India&#8217;s Economy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>The government should expand irrigation facilities to reduce dependence on rainfall.<\/li>\n<li>It should increase public investment in climate-resilient agriculture.<\/li>\n<li>Drought-resistant and high-yielding crop varieties should be developed and promoted.<\/li>\n<li>Farmers should be provided easy access to improved seeds and modern technologies.<\/li>\n<li>Policies should focus on reducing disaster risks before they occur rather than relying only on crop insurance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Conclusion: <\/strong>El Ni\u00f1o poses a major challenge to India&#8217;s agriculture, inflation, rural livelihoods, and overall economic growth.
