Asia.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also <strong>the second largest in Southeast Asia after Angkor Wat in Cambodia. <\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located on the <strong>plains of Central Java, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prambanan Temple Compounds consist of <\/span><b>Prambanan Temple (also called Loro Jonggrang), Sewu Temple, Bubrah Temple and Lumbung Temple.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Architecture:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike many temples with wide, spread-out layouts,<\/span><b> Prambanan&#8217;s tall towers rise steeply into the sky, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating a striking skyline that can be seen from far away.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>At the centre of the complex are three main temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>Shiva temple is the tallest, standing about 47 metres high.<\/strong> It is the most prominent temple and contains statues of Shiva, Durga, Ganesha, and the sage Agastya.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally,<strong> the complex had about 240 temples covering nearly 40 hectares,<\/strong> making it one of the largest religious sites built in ancient Java.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the<\/span><b> main temples were hundreds of smaller temples called pervara shrines. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these are now in ruins.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temples are arranged in a carefully planned square layout based on Hindu beliefs about the universe.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temples are <\/span><b>decorated with detailed stone carvings. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The galleries around the temples contain w<\/span><b>ell-preserved bas-reliefs, a type of sculpture where figures are carved so they project slightly from a flat surface. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These carvings tell stories from the Ramayana, one of Hinduism&#8217;s most important epics.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visitors<\/span><b> traditionally walk clockwise around the temple corridors, following the story shown in the carvings,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> much like reading an ancient graphic novel carved in stone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These reliefs show the <\/span><b>influence of Indian literature while also reflecting the unique artistic style of Java.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Recognition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Prambanan Temple Compounds in Yogyakarta were designated as a <\/span><b>UNESCO World
