{"id":367135,"date":"2026-07-10T13:58:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T08:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=367135"},"modified":"2026-07-10T13:58:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T08:28:00","slug":"desert-rain-frog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/desert-rain-frog\/","title":{"rendered":"Desert Rain Frog"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News: <\/strong>The desert rain frog (Breviceps macrops) has become increasingly vulnerable to extinction, according to the latest International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Desert Rain Frog<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.inaturalist.org\/photos\/107366710\/large.jpg?resize=365%2C243&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Desert Rain Frog (Breviceps macrops) \" width=\"365\" height=\"243\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: iNaturalist<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The Desert Rain Frog is a<strong> species of frog in the family Brevicipitidae.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also known as <strong>web-footed rain frog, or Boulenger&#8217;s short-headed frog .<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific name:<\/strong> Its scientific name is<strong> Breviceps macrops.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> Its natural habitat is <strong>the narrow strip of sandy shores between the sea and the sand dunes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> It occurs on the<strong> Namaqualand coast of South Africa, north to L\u00fcderitz in coastal south-western Namibia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Characteristics:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appearance:<\/strong> It is a<strong> plump species with bulging eyes,<\/strong> a <strong>short<\/strong> <strong>snout<\/strong>,<strong> short limbs, spade-like feet, and webbed toes.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It has a <strong>stout body, with small legs, which makes it unable to hop or leap<\/strong> \u2013 instead, it walks around on the sand.<\/li>\n<li>On the underside, it has a transparent area of skin through which its internal organs can be seen.<\/li>\n<li>It can be between 4 and 6 centimetres (1.6 and 2.4 in) long.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Its color is yellowish-brown<\/strong>, and sand often adheres to its skin.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike most other species of frogs<strong>, it develops directly from the egg into adults without passing through the tadpole stage.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diet:<\/strong> It feeds on <strong>small insects, such as beetles, moths, termites, and their larvae. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Behaviour:<\/strong> It is <strong>fossorial which means it has adapted to burrowing and underground living,<\/strong> without water, burying itself in sand dunes vegetated with low vegetation.\n<ul>\n<li>It is <strong>nocturnal, spending the day in a burrow<\/strong> which is dug to a depth of 10 to 20 centimetres (3.9 to 7.9 in) where the sand is moist.<\/li>\n<li>Its<strong> footprints are distinctive a<\/strong>nd are often found around patches of dung.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>digs its way into the sand in the morning<\/strong> and its presence in a locality can be deduced from the little pile of loose sand dislodged by its burrowing activities.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>produces a high-pitched squeaking<\/strong> <strong>sound<\/strong> when <strong>threatened<\/strong>.
