style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also called<\/span><b> Asian buffalo, Asiatic buffalo and wild buffalo.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Scientific name: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its scientific name is<\/span><b> Bubalus arnee.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Habitat: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It inhabits<strong> wet grasslands, swamps, flood plains and densely vegetated<\/strong> river valleys.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Distribution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wild water buffalo occurs in <\/span><b>India, Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, and Cambodia, with an unconfirmed population in Myanmar.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been extirpated in <\/span><b>Bangladesh, Laos, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, it is largely restricted to in and around <\/span><b>Kaziranga, Manas and Dibru-Saikhowa National Parks, Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary and Bura Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in a few scattered pockets in <\/span><b>Assam,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in and around <\/span><b>D&#8217;Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A small population survives in <\/span><b>Balphakram National Park in Meghalaya, and in Chhattisgarh in <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indravati-national-park\/\">Indravati National Park<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/udanti-sitanadi-tiger-reserve\/\">Udanti Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a>.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Characteristics:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has an<\/span><b> ash-gray to black skin.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>moderately long, coarse and sparse hair<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is directed forward from <\/span><b>the haunches to the long and narrow head.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a <\/span><b>tuft on the forehead,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>ears are comparatively small.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Size: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its head-to-body-length is <\/span><b>240 to 300 cm (94 to 118 in).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Both sexes carry horns <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that are heavy at the base and<\/span><b> widely spreading up to 2 m (6 ft 7 in) along the outer edges, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exceeding in size the horns of any other living bovid.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tip of the <\/span><b>tail is bushy and the hooves are large and splayed.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Weight:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It weighs from<\/span><b> 600 to 1,200 kg.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is among the<\/span><b> heaviest living wild bovid species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is slightly smaller than gaur.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Diet: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It prefers <\/span><b>grazing on grasses and sedges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but also <\/span><b>eats herbs, fruits, bark, and foliage. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, <\/span><b>it feeds on crops like rice, sugarcane, and jute,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often causing significant damage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Behaviour: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is both <\/span><strong>diurnal and
