ZEE News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Paizhen Fault<\/strong>\u00a0is an <strong>active geological fault<\/strong> located <strong>beneath the Medog dam site<\/strong> in the reservoir area on the<strong> Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) River.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Faults<\/strong> are <strong>fractures in earth&#8217;s crust<\/strong> where <strong>rocks<\/strong> on either side of the crack have <strong>slid past each other<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tectonic Origin:<\/strong> It was created by the <strong>ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Active Since:<\/strong>\u00a0It has remained <strong>highly active since the Pleistocene epoch<\/strong>, (<strong>Ice Age) <\/strong>and geological evidence shows that it <strong>continued to remain active into the Holocene epoch,<\/strong> with movement recorded as recently as 9,500 years ago.\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Milin area of Tibet in 2017<\/strong> near the <strong>northern end of the fault<\/strong>, confirming its continuing seismic activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Concerns:<\/strong>\u00a0It may <strong>weaken the foundation-bearing capacity of the area<\/strong> and increase the <strong>risk of earthquakes, landslides, slope collapses, and structural damage to the Medog Hydropower Project.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News:\u00a0Chinese geologists have warned that the under-construction Medog Hydropower Project is being built above the active Paizhen Fault, raising structural safety concerns.
