It is unstable.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Half-life:<\/strong> The physical half-life of tritium is 12.33 years, meaning that it takes just over 12 years for tritium to decay to half of its original amount.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it <strong>bonds with oxygen, it forms tritiated water, or HTO.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It decays over time, and <strong>while decaying, it emits beta radiation.<\/strong> As tritium decays, <strong>it changes to helium.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Production: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is produced<\/span><b> naturally from interactions of cosmic rays with gases in the upper atmosphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is <\/span><b>also a by-product of nuclear reactors.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Uses<\/strong>: It is combined with phosphor<\/span><b> to produce self-luminous lighting used in exit signs, emergency lighting, and airport runway markers.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also <\/span><b>used as a radioactive tracer in biomedical research <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to study and diagnose diseases such as heart disease, cancer and AIDS.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the future<\/span><b>, it is expected to play a key role in generating electricity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through nuclear fusion reactors.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: A new study published in Environmental Science &amp; Technology reports a breakthrough in removing tritium from contaminated water using a metal-organic framework (MOF).
