{"id":367559,"date":"2026-07-16T17:40:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T12:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=367559"},"modified":"2026-07-16T17:40:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T12:10:06","slug":"treaty-of-rarotonga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/treaty-of-rarotonga\/","title":{"rendered":"Treaty of Rarotonga"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News: <\/strong>China tested its first submarine-launched ICBM in international waters which landed in the South Pacific Nuclear-Free Zone under the Treaty of Rarotonga, raising strategic concerns for India and the Indo-Pacific over China&#8217;s expanding nuclear capabilities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Treaty of Rarotonga<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 544px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT5C8M-8cyLn558p5HeHWDKxiebGm9bBKMqZI7XWGF8yg&amp;s=10\" alt=\"Treaty of Rarotonga \" width=\"544\" height=\"305\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: CTBTO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong data-start=\"4\" data-end=\"27\">Treaty of Rarotonga<\/strong>\u00a0is an <strong>international agreement<\/strong> that <strong>establishes the South Pacific as a nuclear-weapon-free zone.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is formally known as the <strong data-start=\"51\" data-end=\"93\">South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty (SPNFZ).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is<strong> considered an improvement upon the Tlatelolco Treaty.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Note:<\/strong> The <strong>Tlatelolco Treaty<\/strong> prohibits <strong>Latin American states from acquiring, possessing, developing, testing or using nuclear weapons, and prohibits other countries<\/strong> from storing and deploying nuclear weapons on their territories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Aim:<\/strong> It <strong>aims<\/strong> at <strong>preventing the dumping of nuclear wastes and banning nuclear explosions<\/strong> even for peaceful purposes.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Entered into force:<\/strong> It was signed in <strong>Rarotonga (Cook Islands) on 6 August 1985<\/strong>, and entered i<strong>nto force on 11 December 1986.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Members:<\/strong> It has <strong>14 Parties:<\/strong> <strong>Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Marshall Islands, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Western Samoa.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Obligation under the treaty:<\/strong> Under the Rarotonga Treaty, parties undertake:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Not to acquire nuclear weapons, or assist any other country<\/strong> to acquire them<\/li>\n<li><strong>Not to permit the stationing of nuclear weapons on their territory<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Not to permit the testing of nuclear explosive devices on their territory<\/strong> and not to assist any other country to test nuclear explosive devices<\/li>\n<li>To <strong>apply strict non-proliferation measures to all exports of nuclear materials<\/strong> to ensure exclusively peaceful, non-explosive use<\/li>\n<li><strong>Not to dump radioactive waste at sea within the zone<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Not to assist anyone in dumping such waste at sea,<\/strong> and to support the conclusion of a regional convention which would preclude dumping at sea by anyone in the<br \/>\nregion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Compliance:<\/strong> Its compliance is <strong>verified through the enforcement of<a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/international-atomic-energy-agency-iaea\/\"> International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)<\/a> safeguards agreements.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: China tested its first submarine-launched ICBM in international waters which landed in the South Pacific Nuclear-Free Zone under the Treaty of Rarotonga, raising strategic concerns for India and the Indo-Pacific over China&#8217;s expanding nuclear capabilities.
