{"id":367736,"date":"2026-07-18T18:19:47","date_gmt":"2026-07-18T12:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=367736"},"modified":"2026-07-18T18:19:47","modified_gmt":"2026-07-18T12:49:47","slug":"manasbal-lakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/manasbal-lakes\/","title":{"rendered":"Manasbal Lakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> Manasbal Lake in central Kashmir\u2019s Ganderbal district is showing ecological recovery with the return of migratory birds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Manasbal Lake<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_367745\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-367745\" style=\"width: 441px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-367745\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Source-ResearchGate1.jpg?resize=441%2C490&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Manasbal Lake\" width=\"441\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Source-ResearchGate1.jpg?resize=270%2C300&amp;ssl=1 270w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Source-ResearchGate1.jpg?w=575&amp;ssl=1 575w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-367745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; ResearchGate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Manasbal Lake:<\/strong> It is the <strong>deepest natural freshwater lake in Jammu and Kashmir<\/strong> and is known as the <strong>\u201cSupreme Gem of all Kashmir Lakes.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> The lake is <strong>located in Ganderbal district<\/strong>, <strong>Srinagar<\/strong>, at an altitude of about 1,585\u20131,600 metres <strong>in the Jhelum Valley.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Surroundings:<\/strong> The lake is surrounded by <strong>the Baladar mountains,<\/strong> the <strong>Karewa plateau<\/strong> in the north, and <strong>the Ahtung hills<\/strong> in the south.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Size and depth:<\/strong> The lake covers about 2.81 km\u00b2 and reaches a <strong>depth of up to 13 metres (43 feet).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Water Source:<\/strong> The lake has a <strong>drainage basin of about 10 km\u00b2<\/strong> and receives water <strong>mainly from precipitation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outflow:<\/strong> The outflow of the lake is <strong>regulated into the Jhelum River.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Thermal Stratification:<\/strong> The lake is monomictic, which means it circulates once in a year for a short time.\n<ul>\n<li>It shows <strong>thermal stratification from March to November<\/strong>, with a <strong>thermocline depth of 9 metres.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ecology and Biodiversity:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rich Aquatic Flora:<\/strong> The lake supports <strong>macrophytes, phytoplankton,<\/strong> and extensive growth of <strong>Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera)<\/strong>, which <strong>blooms during July and August.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Diverse Fauna: <\/strong>The lake is <strong>home to zooplankton, benthos, and fish<\/strong> such as Schizothorax niger, Schizothorax esocinus, Cyprinus carpio, and Neomacheilus latius.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Important Bird Habitat:<\/strong> The lake is one of the <strong>largest natural habitats for aquatic birds<\/strong> and <strong>supports many migratory birds,<\/strong> making it an important birdwatching site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Economic Significance:<\/strong> The lake supports local livelihoods through <strong>fishing, water supply, tourism<\/strong>, and the harvesting and marketing of <strong>lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) rootstocks for food and commercial use.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cultural Heritage: <\/strong>The lake has the ruins of a <strong>Mughal garden built by Nur Jahan.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Near the lake, there are also the ruins of a 17th-century fort and an ancient temple dating to 800\u2013900 AD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Manasbal Lake in central Kashmir\u2019s Ganderbal district is showing ecological recovery with the return of migratory birds.
