{"id":367807,"date":"2026-07-20T15:13:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T09:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=367807"},"modified":"2026-07-20T15:13:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T09:43:12","slug":"orange-mouthed-monkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/orange-mouthed-monkey\/","title":{"rendered":"Orange-mouthed Monkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> Scientists have identified a bright Orange-mouthed Monkey found in Africa, as a new species.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Orange-Mouthed Monkey<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cf-images.assettype.com\/downtoearth%2F2026-07-17%2F86ezvcqu%2Forange-mouthed-monkey.jpg?resize=480%2C271&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"orange-mouthed monkey \" width=\"480\" height=\"271\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: DTE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It belongs to the larger group of <strong>colobus monkeys.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific name:<\/strong> Its scientific name is <strong>Colobus congoensis.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is locally known\u00a0 as the<strong> \u2018Likweli\u2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It was<strong> first discovered in 2008.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> It is largely confined to<strong> high, closed-canopy upland forests growing on deep clay soils.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:\u00a0 <\/strong>It lives in the forests of the <strong>Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It was identified in the<strong> remote interfluve (between rivers) region between the Lomami and Congo (Lualaba) rivers<\/strong> in the DRC in 2008.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Characteristics:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It is smaller in size<\/strong> than<strong> Black bearded saki <\/strong>and most other species of the <em>Colobus<\/em> genus.<\/li>\n<li>It has a <strong>black face with a distinctive orange-cream patch around the mouth,<\/strong> the philtrum (the groove between the nose and upper lip), and the lower sides of the nostrils.<\/li>\n<li>It has a <strong>white patch around the anal region,<\/strong> which is an important identifying feature.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>males<\/strong>, the<strong> white perianal patch is covered with fine white hairs.<\/strong> In <strong>females<\/strong>, the <strong>white perianal patch is hairless (glabrous).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It d<strong>oes not have thumbs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Diet: <\/strong>It primarily feeds on<strong> leaves, shoots, and seedlings<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Behaviour:<\/strong> It is <strong>quiet and cryptic.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is often seen <strong>moving in mixed-species groups with up to six different types of primates.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is also known for<strong> their rapid, pulse-like roaring calls,<\/strong> which can be distinguished from other species by a distinctive snort produced between roar sequences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threat:<\/strong> It faces rising threats <strong>from hunting pressure and habitat conversion as human populations in the DRC grow.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation status:<\/strong> Scientists <strong>propose listing it as Endangered<\/strong> on the IUCN Red List.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Scientists have identified a bright Orange-mouthed Monkey found in Africa, as a new species.
