{"id":367876,"date":"2026-07-21T15:34:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T10:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=367876"},"modified":"2026-07-21T15:34:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T10:04:17","slug":"wto-agreement-on-fisheries-subsidies-and-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/wto-agreement-on-fisheries-subsidies-and-india\/","title":{"rendered":"WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies and India"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> India has deposited its Instrument of Acceptance of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (AFS) thereby becoming a Party to the agreement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies and India<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/007684_4b1bf7a2069b4c139ec90e93dc5da922~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_1000%2Ch_750%2Cal_c%2Cq_85%2Cusm_0.66_1.00_0.01\/007684_4b1bf7a2069b4c139ec90e93dc5da922~mv2.jpeg?resize=309%2C232&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies\" width=\"309\" height=\"232\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: WTO- Boutery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the<strong> first WTO agreement<\/strong> that <strong>focuses on environmental sustainability.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It establishes<strong> a set of binding prohibitions and rules<\/strong> that seek to ensure that the <strong>support provided by governments to their fishing sector does not undermine the sustainability of marine resources<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Adoption year:<\/strong> It was adopted by consensus at the <strong>12th WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva in June 2022.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It <strong>entered into force on 15 September 2025<\/strong> after acceptance by <strong>two-thirds of WTO Members.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus:<\/strong> It focuses on<strong> subsidies related to marine wild capture fishing and fishing-related activities at sea.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Aquaculture and inland fisheries <\/strong>remain<strong> outside <\/strong>the scope of this Agreement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0 seeks <strong>to promote the conservation and sustainable use of marine fisheries resources<\/strong> while <strong>providing appropriate flexibilities for developing and least-developed country Members.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Member:<\/strong> It has <strong>123 member<\/strong>s, who have formally<strong> joined the Agreement.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>India is the <strong>123rd Member of the WTO to deposit its Instrument of Acceptance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features of the agreement<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It protects the <strong>livelihoods of traditional and small-scale fishers<\/strong> by promoting sustainable fisheries.<\/li>\n<li>It also<strong> bans subsidies for illegal, unreported, unregulated (IUU) fishing and overfished stocks<\/strong> to conserve marine resources and ensure long-term benefits for fishing communities.<\/li>\n<li>It promotes <strong>fairer fisheries by curbing harmful subsidies<\/strong> to large industrial fishing fleets, benefiting countries that rely mainly on small-scale fisheries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Benefits for India:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It benefits India,<strong> where fisheries are mainly small-scale and industrial fishing is limited.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"12oti8e\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"129\">It <strong>enhances India&#8217;s credibility as a responsible seafood exporter and improves access<\/strong> to premium global markets.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"4vyg9g\" data-start=\"130\" data-end=\"269\" data-is-last-node=\"\"><strong>India&#8217;s seafood exports remain competitive<\/strong> because aquaculture-based shrimp, its major export<strong>, is outside the scope of the Agreement.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"4k9biq\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"180\">By joining the Agreement, India reaffirms its <strong>commitment to sustainable fisheries management and the protection of marine resources for food security<\/strong> and coastal livelihoods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: India has deposited its Instrument of Acceptance of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (AFS) thereby becoming a Party to the agreement.
