PIB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mission Golden Spice<\/strong>\u00a0is an <strong>Integrated<\/strong> <strong>Lakadong Turmeric Value Chain Enhancement Project<\/strong> for turmeric cultivation and value chain development in Meghalaya.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Initiative by:<\/strong> The <strong>Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER)<\/strong> launched the mission with the <strong>Government of Meghalaya.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Implementing Agencies:<\/strong> The mission is <strong>anchored by MDoNER and the North Eastern Council (NEC)<\/strong> in collaboration with the <strong>Government of Meghalaya.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Inter-Ministerial Convergence:<\/strong> The mission works with the <strong>Ministries of Agriculture &amp; Farmers Welfare, Food Processing Industries, and Commerce, <\/strong>along with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority <strong>(APEDA)<\/strong>, <strong>Spices Board, <\/strong>National Turmeric Board, Indian Council of Agricultural Research <strong>(ICAR), <\/strong>Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology<strong> (MeitY), <\/strong>National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development<strong> (NABARD), and <\/strong>Small Farmers Agribusiness Consortium <strong>(SFAC).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Financial Outlay:<\/strong> The government has approved an <strong>outlay of \u20b9175.45 crore for the mission.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Time Period:<\/strong> The mission will be <strong>implemented in two phases<\/strong> of an <strong>Five year roadmap (2025-2030)<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Implementation Phases:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First phase:<\/strong> Focus on <strong>Value chain strengthening and expansion<\/strong> and scale up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Second phase:<\/strong> Promotion of <strong>Meghalaya\u2019s Unique Selling Proposition(USP).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Target:<\/strong> The mission aims to increase <strong>farmers\u2019 remuneration from \u20b930\u201340 per kilogram to nearly \u20b980 per kilogram by 2030<\/strong> and expand the cultivation area <strong>from about 2,500 hectares to 7,500 hectares.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Lakadong Turmeric<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cultivation Area:<\/strong> Lakadong turmeric is <strong>cultivated in the Lakadong area of the Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Special Quality:<\/strong> It <strong>contains 7\u201312% curcumin,<\/strong> which is nearly <strong>four times<\/strong> the world average.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recognition:<\/strong> It received the <strong>Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Characteristics:<\/strong> The turmeric is <strong>darker in colour<\/strong>, is <strong>organically grown without fertilizers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Uses<\/strong>: It is <strong>used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Unique Advantage:<\/strong> <strong>Meghalaya\u2019s acidic, iron-rich soil and specific environmental conditions<\/strong> contribute to the <strong>unique qualities of Lakadong turmeric.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Union Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) launched Mission Golden Spice to promote Meghalaya\u2019s GI-tagged Lakadong turmeric globally.
