is<\/span><b> a perennial river. <\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also called <\/span><b>\u201cHiranyavaha\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because of its <strong>golden coloured sand<\/strong>. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was believed that the river <strong>carried gold dust<\/strong> in its flow.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Origin: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It originates in th<\/span><b>e Amarkantak hills of the Maikal Range in Madhya Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Course of river: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It flows in a north<\/span><b>-northwest direction till Bansagar reservoir, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after which it changes its course sharply eastwards, <\/span><b>flowing parallel to Kaimur Range, and joins Ganga River 30 km upstream of Patna in Bihar.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It flows through the <\/span><b>Deccan Peninsula and Gangetic Plains biogeographic zones.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>The upper stretch of the Son River passes through the tiger landscape of Central India.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Valley:<\/strong> The Sone River valley is <\/span><b>geologically regarded as a continuation of the Narmada River valley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> towards the southwest.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The valley is bordered by the Kaimur Range in the north and the Chota Nagpur Plateau in the south.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Total length:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Its total length is <\/span><b>784 km.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>States through which it flows: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It flows through<\/span><b> Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Tributary of: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a tributary of the <strong>river Ganga<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Tributaries: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its tributaries are <\/span><b>Banas, Gopad, Rihand, Kanhar and North Koel.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Species associated:<\/strong> It supports populations of<\/span><b> key indicator species such as gharial and mugger.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Seven species of turtles, Red-crowned roofed turtle, three-striped roofed turtle, crowned river turtle, Indian tent turtle, Indian narrow-headed softshell turtle, Ganges softshell turtle, and Indian flapshell turtle <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been reported from the River.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Dams constructed on river: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Bansagar Dam (Madhya Pradesh)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Rihand Dam (Uttar Pradesh)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Indrapuri Barrage (Bihar)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the major dams and water infrastructure projects built on the Sone
