PIB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Full form:<\/strong> <strong>Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes (MISHTI) Scheme<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is a scheme <strong>to promote, conserve and restore mangroves<\/strong> for ecological protection and climate resilience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Launched by:<\/strong> The <strong>Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change<\/strong> launched the scheme <strong>in 2023.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> It <strong>aims<\/strong> to <strong>promote and conserve mangroves<\/strong>, restore degraded areas, strengthen coastal ecosystems and improve <strong>climate resilience<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Funding Sources: <\/strong>The scheme promotes <strong>convergence<\/strong> of resources from the <strong>CAMPA<\/strong> (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) <strong>fund<\/strong> and <strong>MGNREGS<\/strong> (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme)\u00a0.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Target:<\/strong> The scheme aims to <strong>restore <\/strong>approximately<strong> 540 sq. km of mangrove habitats over five years (2023\u20132028).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"292\" data-end=\"575\"><strong>Coverage Area:<\/strong> The scheme is being implemented <strong>across 11 States &#8211; <\/strong>West Bengal, Gujarat, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana &#8211; <strong>and 2 Union Territories,<\/strong> namely Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"292\" data-end=\"575\"><strong>International Significance:<\/strong> The MISHTI scheme <strong>aligns <\/strong>India with the <strong>UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) <\/strong>and the<strong> Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC), <\/strong>which India joined during COP27.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Great Green Wall of Andhra Pradesh initiative<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an <strong>ecological restoration project<\/strong> that develops mangroves, shelterbelts, windbreaks, agroforestry and community plantations <strong>along the Andhra Pradesh coastline.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> It\u2019s aim is to <strong>protect coastal communities and ecosystems from cyclones, floods and erosion.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Inspiration:<\/strong> It draws inspiration from <strong>Africa&#8217;s Great Green Wall and the Aravalli Green Wall Project.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Funding:<\/strong> It is supported <strong>through MGNREGS, CAMPA, Green Credit Programme, District Mineral Funds and International Climate Finance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Geographical Coverage:<\/strong> It covers <strong>Andhra Pradesh&#8217;s 1,053-km coastline.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Target:<\/strong> It aims to create a <strong>5-km-wide living ecological shield along the coastline by 2030. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Key features:<\/strong>\n<ul data-start=\"966\" data-end=\"1487\">\n<li data-start=\"966\" data-end=\"1088\"><strong>Multi-layered Green Buffer: <\/strong>It includes <strong>mangroves, shelterbelts, windbreaks, agroforestry and community plantations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1267\"><strong>Fish Bone Technique:<\/strong> It adopts the <strong>Fish Bone Technique to improve tidal water circulation, increase mangrove survival rates and enhance long-term ecological resilience<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1376\" data-end=\"1487\"><strong>Climate Resilience: <\/strong>It strengthens biodiversity conservation and supports sustainable coastal management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: solid;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>About Fish Bone Technique<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Fish Bone Technique<\/strong>\u00a0 is an <strong>innovative mangrove restoration method<\/strong> <strong>used in degraded areas with poor tidal water flow.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Working Mechanism:<\/strong> It <strong>creates a central &#8220;backbone&#8221; channel with smaller angled feeder channels<\/strong> that divert tidal water into degraded mudflats and mimic natural tidal creeks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mangrove Restoration:<\/strong> The <strong>improved tidal flow enhances soil salinity and aeration<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Once suitable conditions are created, mangrove seedlings are planted, and natural regeneration is supported.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Andhra Pradesh secured second place under the MISHTI scheme after restoring 2,047.70 hectares of mangroves during 2025\u201326.
