fourth UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tentative List:<\/strong> It has <strong>remained on UNESCO&#8217;s Tentative List since 1998.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> It is a sacred city <strong>located in north-east of Varanasi<\/strong> near the <strong>confluence of the Ganges and the Varuna rivers<\/strong> in <strong>Uttar Pradesh, India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Discovered By:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rediscovery:<\/strong> The rediscovery of Sarnath is credited to the <strong>workers of Jagat Singh, the diwan of Raja Chait Singh of Benares, in 1799.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Identification:<\/strong> <strong>Jonathan Duncan reported the findings,<\/strong> which led to later excavations.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alexander Cunningham identified Sarnath as the place of Lord Buddha&#8217;s first sermon in 1836.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific Excavation:<\/strong> <strong>Friedrich Oertel<\/strong> carried out the <strong>first systematic and scientific excavation<\/strong> of Sarnath during 1904\u201305.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historical and Religious Significance:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ancient Name:<\/strong> Ancient <strong>Buddhist scriptures<\/strong> describe <strong>Sarnath Rishipattana, meaning the \u201cplace of sages.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>First Teaching of Dharma:<\/strong> Sarnath is <strong>one of the four most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites<\/strong> because <strong>Gautama Buddha taught the Dharma for the first time here.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>other three<\/strong> most important pilgrimages <strong>are Lumbini (the birthplace of Gautama Buddha), Bodh Gaya (the location of Lord Buddha\u2019s enlightenment), and Kushinagar (the location of Buddha\u2019s parinirvana).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta:<\/strong> It is also said that <strong>Lord Buddha&#8217;s Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta was written in Sarnath.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Architectural Marvels of Sarnath<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Dhamekha Stupa:<\/strong> A conspicuous structure believed to be the <strong>dwelling place of Pa\u00f1cavaggiya monks after leaving Lord Buddha.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It was <strong>constructed by Emperor Ashoka.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is considered the sacred ground where the voice of Buddhism first resonated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Chaukhandi Stupa:<\/strong> Presently undergoing reconstruction, this stupa marks the site <strong>where Buddha met his first disciples.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Ashoka Pillar (Lion Capital of Ashoka):<\/strong> Despite facing fragmentation during Turk invasions, this pillar is an enduring imperial glimpse<\/strong> into the <strong>communal life of the monks.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mulagandhakuti Vihara:<\/strong> This modern temple stands where <strong>Lord Buddha is believed to have spent his first rainy season in meditation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sarnath Archaeological Museum:<\/strong> Housing a vast <strong>collection of artifacts<\/strong>, it provides a visual narrative of Sarnath\u2019s historical and cultural evolution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Other Important Buddhist Pilgrimage Sites<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lumbini (Nepal):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Birthplace of Buddha:<\/strong> Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Buddha and is <strong>located in the Rupandehi district of Nepal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ashokan Legacy:<\/strong> Emperor <strong>Ashoka erected a commemorative pillar at the site.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rediscovery:<\/strong> It was <strong>rediscovered in 1896<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UNESCO Recognition:<\/strong> It was inscribed as a <strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site in <strong>simple shrine at the site in the 3rd century BCE<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1171\" data-end=\"1278\"><strong>Present Temple:<\/strong> The <strong>present pyramidal temple dates to the where <strong><strong>Lord Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana <\/strong><\/strong>(ultimate salvation).<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1619\" data-end=\"1775\"><strong>Important Monuments:<\/strong> The Mahaparinirvana Temple <strong>houses a reclining statue of Buddha.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1619\" data-end=\"1775\"><strong>The Ramabhar Stupa is believed to be Buddha\u2019s cremation site.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1776\" data-end=\"1899\"><strong>Historical Importance:<\/strong> Kushinagar was the <strong>capital of the ancient Malla republic, one of the 16 Mahajanapadas.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2032\" data-end=\"2202\"><strong>Excavation:<\/strong> <strong>Alexander Cunningham and A.C.L.
