
{"id":368471,"date":"2026-07-29T15:24:46","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T09:54:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=368471"},"modified":"2026-07-29T15:24:46","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T09:54:46","slug":"tigidia-singhal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/tigidia-singhal\/","title":{"rendered":"Tigidia Singhal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: Researchers have described a new trapdoor spider species, Tigidia singhal, from the semi-arid grasslands of the Deccan Plateau.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Tigidia Singhal<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/07\/28095654\/Live_plate_new-1-1200x642.jpg?resize=520%2C278&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Tigidia singhal\" width=\"520\" height=\"278\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Mongabay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong data-start=\"36\" data-end=\"55\">Tigidia singhal<\/strong> is a newly described species of <strong data-start=\"88\" data-end=\"107\" data-is-only-node=\"\">trapdoor spider<\/strong> discovered in the <strong data-start=\"126\" data-end=\"172\">semi-arid grasslands of the Deccan Plateau<\/strong> in Maharashtra.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Genus and Family<\/strong>: It belongs to the <strong data-start=\"370\" data-end=\"387\">genus Tigidia<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"396\" data-end=\"442\">family Barychelidae (brush-footed spiders)<\/strong>, within the <strong data-start=\"455\" data-end=\"483\">infraorder Mygalomorphae<\/strong>, which also includes tarantulas and funnel-web spiders.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Its discovery <strong>brings the number of Tigidia species in India to eight.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong data-start=\"702\" data-end=\"779\" data-is-only-node=\"\">first record of the genus Tigidia from a semi-arid open natural ecosystem<\/strong>, expanding its known range beyond tropical evergreen and deciduous forests.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat<\/strong>: It inhabits<strong> rocky hilltop grasslands of the Deccan Plateau.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Note:<\/strong> Spiders of the genus\u00a0<em>Tigidia<\/em>\u00a0occur <strong>only in Madagascar, Mauritius and India.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Characteristics: <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong> female spider measures<\/strong> about <strong data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1051\">15 mm<\/strong> in length.<\/li>\n<li>It has <strong data-start=\"1070\" data-end=\"1124\">black legs covered with greyish bristle-like hairs<\/strong> and a <strong data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1179\">lighter abdomen with chevron-shaped markings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"z9gyr7\" data-start=\"1733\" data-end=\"1923\">It\u00a0constructs <strong data-start=\"1761\" data-end=\"1783\" data-is-only-node=\"\">silk-lined burrows<\/strong> that are generally <strong data-start=\"1803\" data-end=\"1819\">4\u201310 cm deep<\/strong>, have <strong data-start=\"1826\" data-end=\"1842\">two openings<\/strong>, and are usually located <strong>at the edges of rocks where soil retains more moisture.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li data-section-id=\"1ml4vbg\" data-start=\"1924\" data-end=\"2045\">These burrows help protect the spider from <strong data-start=\"1969\" data-end=\"1998\">desiccation and predators<\/strong> while also enabling efficient capture of prey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Behaviour: <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>I<\/strong>t is<strong> long-living, sedentary spiders<\/strong> that spend most of their lives in burrows, rarely leaving except to search for a mate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Threat:<\/strong> The species faces threats from:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong data-start=\"2363\" data-end=\"2453\">land-use change<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong data-start=\"2363\" data-end=\"2453\"> soil extraction<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong data-start=\"2363\" data-end=\"2453\"> tourism-generated plastic waste, and <\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong data-start=\"2363\" data-end=\"2453\">stone quarrying<\/strong>, which destroy its rocky microhabitats.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Researchers have described a new trapdoor spider species, Tigidia singhal, from the semi-arid grasslands of the Deccan Plateau.
