irrigation and industrial and domestic use in the water-stressed Saurashtra region of Gujarat.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It envisages the <strong>creation of one of the world&#8217;s largest coastal freshwater reservoirs<\/strong> through the construction of a dam across the Gulf of Khambhat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Initiative by:<\/strong> It is an ambitious water resources <strong>initiatives of the Government of Gujarat.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Assisted by:<\/strong> The <strong>Netherlands<\/strong> is collaborating with India by providing <strong>technical expertise and engineering support<\/strong> for the Kalpasar Project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Features of the project:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The project includes the <strong>construction of a 60.13 km long dam across the Gulf, from Aladar (eastern side) to near Bhavnagar (western side).<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Out of which about <strong>26.7 km length will be in the Gulf (sea portion), and 33.43 km length is extended on both flanks<\/strong> up to the nearest road across the Gulf of Khambhat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It includes <strong>a proposed highway-cum-rail corridor<\/strong> over the dam across the Gulf of Khambhat.\n<ul>\n<li>As per the present project layout, the corridor is expected <strong>to reduce the travel distance between Bhavnagar and Surat by approximately 179 km, from about 356 km through the existing land route to about 177 km via the proposed dyke corridor, t<\/strong>hereby improving regional connectivity and reducing travel time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The project envisages<strong> development of approximately 2,470 MW of hybrid renewable energy capacity<\/strong> on reclaimed land that is presently submerged during high tide.\n<ul>\n<li>The renewable energy<strong> generated is proposed to be utilized for pumping freshwater to meet irrigation requirements in the coastal regions of Saurashtra.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>This reservoir will receive water from <strong>four major rivers \u2013 Sabarmati, Mahi, Dhadhar and Narmada<\/strong> \u2013 and <strong>seven minor rivers \u2013 Wadhwan Bhogavo, Limbdi Bhogavo, Sukhbhadar, Utavli, Keri, Ghelo,<\/strong> and<strong> Kalubhar<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>For this,<strong> a diversion canal is planned at the Bhadbhut barrage on the Narmada River<\/strong> to divert its additional water into the reservoir.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Benefits:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Environmental benefits:<\/strong> The project is expected <strong>to improve groundwater conditions, protect tidal-affected areas,<\/strong> reduce coastal salinity, and reclaim approximately <strong data-start=\"142\" data-end=\"164\">1.76 lakh hectares<\/strong> of land.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Renewable energy: <\/strong>Kalpasar has the <strong>potential to generate 1,000 MW of solar power and 1,500 MW of wind power,<\/strong> helping meet the project&#8217;s energy requirements.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Livelihoods:<\/strong> The freshwater reservoir is expected to <strong>replace marine fisheries with freshwater fisheries,<\/strong> increasing annual fish production from <strong data-start=\"458\" data-end=\"472\">2,000 tons<\/strong> in the initial stages to <strong data-start=\"498\" data-end=\"513\">20,000 tons<\/strong> at full development.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Transport &amp; connectivity:<\/strong> It includes plans for a <strong data-start=\"645\" data-end=\"664\">flood regulator<\/strong>, a <strong data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"687\">16-lane roadway<\/strong>, and a <strong data-start=\"695\" data-end=\"719\">4-lane rail corridor<\/strong>, reducing the travel distance across the Gulf from <strong data-start=\"771\" data-end=\"790\">240 km to 60
