{"id":368548,"date":"2026-07-30T15:19:23","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T09:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=368548"},"modified":"2026-07-30T15:19:23","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T09:49:23","slug":"rusty-spotted-cat-prionailurus-rubiginosus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/rusty-spotted-cat-prionailurus-rubiginosus\/","title":{"rendered":"Rusty-spotted Cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> Scientists at the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) have reported two roadkill incidents of the rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus) at the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-chambal-sanctuary\/\">National Chambal Sanctuary<\/a> in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Rusty-spotted Cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus)<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 374px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.takeshape.io\/86ce9525-f5f2-4e97-81ba-54e8ce933da7\/dev\/9ab88112-1377-4cb1-b374-67b72aa36037\/dreamstime_l_190957655.jpg?resize=374%2C280&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Rusty-spotted cat\" width=\"374\" height=\"280\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: One Earth<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is widely <strong>recognised as the world\u2019s smallest wild cat species<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific name:<\/strong> Its scientific name is <strong>Prionailurus rubiginosus.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> It inhabits <strong>moist and dry forests, tropical thorn forests, scrub forests, grasslands and rocky areas.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution<\/strong>: It is native to<strong> India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Characteristics<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appearance:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Its coat is<strong> short and soft.<\/strong>\u00a0 It is fawn-grey coloured with a rufous tinge and is patterned.<\/li>\n<li>There are <strong>horizontal bars on the\u00a0legs and chest. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Its <strong>head is rounded<\/strong>, and the relatively <strong>large eyes are marked with a white streak along the inside edge. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Each<strong> cheek is marked with two dark streaks<\/strong> and <strong>four dark stripes extend from above the eyes backward over the head to the neck. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>back and sides are marked with red-brown blotches<\/strong> which merge into lines.<\/li>\n<li>The<strong> belly, chest and throat are white<\/strong> and<strong> covered with large dark spots and bars. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The<strong> ears are rounded and small. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Its <strong>tail is about half the length of the head and body,<\/strong> more rufous than the body and faintly marked with dark rings.\u00a0 The<strong> soles of the feet are black.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Size:<\/strong> It is roughly half the size of a domestic cat, <strong>measuring just 38-45 cm in body length.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Weight:<\/strong> It weights <strong>between 1 and 2 kg.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diet:<\/strong> It is a <strong>carnivore that mainly feeds on rodents and birds.<\/strong> It also eats frogs, insects, and lizards.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Behaviour:<\/strong> It is primarily <strong>noctural and extremely shy. <\/strong>It is also <strong>a secretive hunter.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threat<\/strong>: <strong>Habitat loss and fragmentation<\/strong> are the primary threats to the rusty-spotted cat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation status:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IUCN: <\/strong>It is listed as <strong>Near Threatened.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CITES:<\/strong> It is listed under <strong>Appendix I.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Scientists at the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) have reported two roadkill incidents of the rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus) at the National Chambal Sanctuary in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh.
